I feel that people are mistreating how the main disc should be represented just because they don't like the "optional" child entries. Personally, I like being able to easily figure out which disc has which content.

And where do we draw the line? Are features really different than audio tracks. Some might consider a Spanish dub to be a feature. Or closed captioning. Would you really want them added to the main entry if they only existed on the child?

I agree.

I will stop contributing Features. This seems foolish to me as I want to know which disc to put in to watch the special features. I will keep it local. So it seems that people who don't want to keep track of children get the thumbs up.

The fact that the child profiles are optional makes all other arguments irrelevant imho. That tells me that all bonus features should be listed in the main profile. Otherwise, they cannot be optional.

As for region info, I do use the region coding of the blu-ray disc locally for the main profile, if I can be bothered to check it.

I don't make that inference at all; especially since it could have been stated in the rules when in fact it says the opposite.

Indeed. Once again: there's no question that the set that you're holding in your hand contains bonus material - on which disc it's placed doesn't matter. If the set includes bonus material, the profile for that set should reflect that. It's really as simple as that.

I think that the "child optional" rule should be viewed in historical context. When Blu-Ray/DVD combos were introduced, the storage space on Blu-Ray was so much greater than on DVD, so even though the HD features took much more space than the SD features on the DVD, storage space was never a constraint for the Blu-Ray, so there was never any reason to leave out any features.

With 4K/Blu-Ray combos, the situation is different. As I understand it, it is quite possible for the 4K features to take up so much more space that not all features that are found on the Blu-Ray may fit on the 4K. It is my belief that when the "child optional" rule was introduced, the 4K/Blu-Ray problem had not been considered, and in my opinion, when the Blu-Ray contains features that are not present on the 4K, the child profile should be submitted. Those who don't want the child profile can add said features to the 4K profile and keep it local.

So the question is if we're profiling the set, or are we profiling the main media type only? My view is that we're profiling the set. Again, the fact that the profile's "Media Type" isn't listed as 4K-only, but instead as 4K + Blu-ray, underlines that to me, along with the fact that the Blu-ray disc is listed on the "Discs" tab. It isn't a profile for a 4K disc only - it's a profile for the combo pack in it's entirety, a profile for the entire set. From that ensues that we have to look at the entire set for any bonus material.

Here are my thoughts on the matters you raised.

The combo set rule answers both your questions regarding profiling the set or profiling the main media type only:
•  At the very minimum, you can add a 4K only profile, that is an incomplete combo set.
•  When you add the child Blu-ray to the 4K parent, it then becomes the complete combo set.

An optional child profile means you don't have to add a child profile, it doesn't mean that the main feature on that disc is non-existent.

If that child disc was released in its own UPC keep case, or Box set, it would be considered a bona-fide main feature profile. Combining that disc with a 4K disc in a single keep case doesn't change it's main feature status.

Checking the Blu-ray media type allows the addition of a child Blu-ray discID to the 4K box set contents. If the Blu-ray media type was not checked, you would not be allowed (approved) to add the child Blu-ray profile.

There should be only one main feature DiscID in the 4K profile and that is the 4K DiscID. The Blu-ray DiscID should be removed from the 4K profile after adding the child Blu-ray profile.

- if I grab a 4K disc from the shelf, I already know that it isn't region-coded - I don't need to look at the profile for that.
...

Not all 4K discs are region free.

Take a look at Shout Factory's USA 4K release of "Weathering With You", the 4K disc is Region A locked.

And there are more.

Probably unintended manufacturing errors, because the UHD alliance has regulated that UHD discs are region free.

Well, this is happening again. Did two contributions adding the features to the 4K parent profile and got a no vote from the same user. Shame this site is dormant in terms of rules and rulings, would be nice to have someone of authority to chime in and make a ruling one way or the other...
