I see people getting mad over this format war.  I don't get mad over this stuff, but I must admit I do get quite disturbed over the HD DVD choice.  Maybe it's because I look at the format war from a global (non-selfish) perspective.  Let me explain...

There are people that want HD DVD to win at all costs. That cost is to doom everyone else to a format of permanent compromise. There are people that can't tell the difference in the picture quality (artifacts, banding, noise, etc.) between the two formats and there are people that can't tell the difference between DD & DTS or TrueHD & LPCM or having their movie title on 1 disc.  I understand that fully.  Keeping that in mind...

If Blu-ray was to win, no one is negatively effected options wise. For the people that don't care about the extra quality/abilities the Blu-ray format affords them, they can just ignore those extras. For the people that love all those extra bells and whistles, they get to enjoy them. The world is equally served.

The truth about cost is that it always comes down (players and software). Just wait until the prices come down to a place where you can afford the equipment and buy then.  There are people still waiting for prices to come down even further at this stage of the format war, so that's no big deal.  It's just that the pricing has come down a lot faster than usual for obvious reasons.

I always thought people are suppose to buy players to play content (their favorite movies).  We should all know the movie studio situation so there is no need to go into that.

Perhaps, it's wrong to think of serving everyone's desire for High-Def and not about only one's impatiences for HD optical.  That's just not the way I was raised.  HD DVD owners would damn us all to a lesser capable format all because they can't tell the difference right now and the immediate price difference.  This doesn't just start and stop with this format war.  And, that shakes me to the very core about the state of humanity.

Let the hateful comments begin.

The only person in this forum who appears to desperately need one side to win at all costs is you. I, however,  just desperately want you to stop shoving your obvious bias down our throats and contribute something of actual worth to the community. Most of the people here are not inherently biased against sony & blu ray, like you seem to believe. I certainly am not. Its just you that no one can stand. For me, your rabid defense of blu ray and slavish fanboy obsession with all things sony is literally the ONLY thing that has me leaning one way or the other. If tomorrow I should fall off the fence and land on the side of HD DVD YOU will be the person who pushed me there. Both sides have (or will have) titles that I will want, and both look freaking awesome in the store when connected to a quality HD display. For now, having just purchased a fancy new upconverting DVD player, the pressure to rush to HD Land is somewhat relieved. Now I suggest you back off and let my distaste of you and all you stand for wash away before I, and others like me allow the taint your evey post places over blu ray to unduly influence our future HD purchases.

Instead of harassing and haranguing us with multiple daily posts, why not spend your time auditing, scanning and contributing the profiles of those many Blu ray titles you own. I am sure the other lBu ray users of this program would apreciate that far more than your ongoing 'support'.

Yes, that's for sure, as the "Blu" profiles are honestly pretty horrendous.  Nasty scans, lack of proper credits (often straight from IMDb), etc., etc.

I'm in the uk, I import alot of movies from different regions, how does blu-ray and its region encoding serve me?

If Blu-ray were to go the way of UMD, Minidisc and Betamax and all the other products Sony love to peddle, then I will be left with an HD format that is cost effective, worked perfectly from day 1, does not need firmware hacks or workarounds to be multi-region (i have a suspicion that with the level of control over the format that Sony has, and their previous record of using every method possible to put the consumer last (can you say "sony music rootkits"), we will never see region free BD players)

I am happy with the quality of hd dvd, i dont think 30gb for a disc is a compromise, you yourself have many 25gb BD discs in your collection, why buy them if they are so hugely compromised? When I buy the extended LOTR movies on HD, I won't give a damn when they come on 2 discs. You also have movies that have "better" soundtracks on hd dvd, why have you compromised?

I know why - its because you are a fanboy sheep, and are insecure enough about your life and your choices, that you feel the need to write uninformed garbage on internet forums to make yourself feel better. No one cares what you say. No one in the world and no one in this forum is going to make their choice of hd formats based on what you write here. They will make their own choices based on what they think and feel. If they can't decide, they will simply wait.

You are the only one in this forum who is emotionally invested in the outcome of this 'war'.  The people you think are getting mad over the war are not.  They are simply sick and tired of your arrogant, "I am a better, smarter, person than everyone else," attitude.

If this really 'shakes you to the very core', I feel sorry for you.  In the grand scheme of things, personal choice about a video format, is meaningless and says nothing about the state of humanity.

I forgot to mention that when I wrote up my piece.  That is indeed a huge plus for Blu-ray.  It wouldn't influence my decision on which format to choose, but it's nice anyway.  I wish HD DVD  would do something similar.  And CDs and DVDs as well.

I don't believe a hard coating on the HD DVD disc is possible.  The data layer is .06m from the surface.  HD DVD is already been having some issues from the thin film on some of the titles like the Matrix Trilogy.  That is why some people have to boil their discs in water to get it to play.

I wonder what HD DVD fans would say about Blu-ray if BD owners had to boil their discs in water to get them to play.  What is up with that?!

STOP posting lies. Blu-ray does NOT have better PQ than HD DVD. Blu-ray does not have extra "bells & whistles" over HD DVD.    One more time  - winning is not the point. You are the only thick-headed, broken record on this forum that ever talks about "winning at all costs" !

The concept of winning / losing has nothing to do with HiDef content or playback and means nothing to anyone except fools like you.

I don't know. Some folks over in the AVSForum are reporting disc rot with some Blu-ray discs (Prestige and Stranger than Fiction).  This may be a byproduct of the protective coating. I am really worried about the longevity of my 80+ Blu-ray discs if some discs are already rotting after only a few months.

I've seen those reports as well.  It's certainly something to keep an eye on.  This is a new technology.  Still, I've seen so many false alarms in the DVD world, that I would start panicking just yet.
