People keep referring to Gerri explaining what the field meant, but if it's not in the Contribution Rules, I hesitate to follow any forum postings from anybody, as there are many contributors who don't even visit the forums, so the Rules should be the sole guideline.

It was a forum post by Gerri herself, I'll see if I can track it down and post a link.

Edit: found it, the original thread is here.

But it didn't, did it?  I don't give a damn one way or the other.  Who actually does the work is irrelevant.  The guy that pays the freight can hire anybody he wants to, be it local, regional, or international.  He pays the bills, he calls the shots, HIS company gets the credit.  In this case, that is New Line, which is US.

So what you're saying is if a businessman paid a sculptor to make a sculpture for his offices, that businessman would be allowed to say that he sculpted it? He paid for it after all, the sculptor only made it!

No, he could say he CAUSED IT TO BE MADE, not that he made it himself.  Nobody is saying Peter Jackson shouldn't get credit as producer and director, or that Wing Nut didn't produce it; but New Line CAUSED IT TO BE MADE and that is the difference.  Now, you could say 'yeah, but anybody could've put up the dough' but then it wouldn't be the same movie, would it?  New Line took a HUGE chance on a relatively unknown director and put up an amount that would have put them out of business if those movies hadn't been the monster hits they were.  Nobody else would've taken that risk, so it would have been a different movie (one, not three in particular).  Even Jackson has acknowledged that fact.

New Line may have caused the trilogy to have been made, unfortunately the CoO field is for the country of the production company that made it - and as you said yourself, WingNut produced it.

When I put the money up for my car it hadn't been made. I had to choose the spec, options, the colour and the trim. I had more input into how the finished product turned out than several studios who have put money up for films. I still think the manufacturer and everyone else on the planet would argue it's country of origin is Germany.

In case people would like to read these same arguments, but when they were presented in March and April this year, the original thread is here:

Whoah! That was a fun read.
We need multiple fields for joint-productions. Ken around?
I fear we're in the dark again with invelos.

Personally I don't get the point of the CoO - 'Hero' is written and directed entirely by people from Asia, yet the distribution company is Miramax, with the film produced by Beijing New Picture Film Co. (China) and Elite Group Enterprises (Hong Kong) - is the CoO for 'Hero' the United States, China or Hong Kong?

Why was the field included - was there a huge clamour for it?

That's why we don't use distributor. In theory a film could have a different distributor in every territory.
At the moment we use primary production company to work it out, although it still doesn't help with co-productions.
Your example - Hero - was distributed worldwide by around ten companies, but only produced by two - a Chinese company and a Hong Kong company.
If you look at the front credits and look for a "A {company name} Production" - it's not always there, but if it is, that's the company to use.
