I'm currently making the episode level cast and crew listings for The West Wing. There are several kind of producers credited in the opening and end credits (Co, Co-Executive, Associate, Executive). I'm not asking who should or should not be included in DVDP.

I'm asking if anybody knows what is the difference between credits "Producer" and "Produced by". I have included them both as Producer in DVDP, but why is there producers credited differently? It kind of makes you think that Producer is some kind of honorary title while the person who is credited as "Produced by" really made something for the episode.

We only use Producer, and Executive Producer as far as the checkboxes go.  'Produced By' is the same as Producer.  In a lot of the really old films, ie. the '30's, you'll see 'Executive in Charge of Production'.  That is the same as Executive Producer today.  Co-, Assoc., Asst. are basically training positions and we don't do them, far as Producer type roles go.

It's funny, you gave me the answer I waited from Skip. I was not interested in my question about what credits we use or not use in DVDP. Mayby it's my fault, I should have asked this question in General Discussion forum instead of Contribution forum.

I was only wondering why they use credits "Producer" and "Produced by" in the same episode. Perhaps there is somebody out there who knows something about television series production who can tell me how the job description of these people differs.

I'm not 100% certain, but in the credits of the programmes I was involved with, the producer of the series would tend to get "Producer" and the producer of the episode got "Produced By".

It's not like that in the TV show I just profiled, northbloke.
In Desperate Housewives, the guy credited with 'Produced By' is in every episode and those credited with 'Producer' changes. So in that show, it's the exact opposite of what your theory says

You're confusing me, reybr.  Desperate Housewives sounds to me to be exactly what northbloke's theory says not the exact opposite.

If the "Produced by' is in every episode, it sounds very much like he/she produced the series.

If the 'Producer' changes with every episode, that tells me he produced the episode(s) and not the entire series.

Why does this sound the exact opposite to you?

I think he meant that I had them the other way round.
Either way, it still gives a reasonable explanation of why there are 2 sets of credits for producers.

Produced by is quite common for TV series as well as Producer credits.  The difference it the Produced by is usually the person in charge of production for that particular episode, where as the Producer credits are the producers for the series.

What about "Supervising Producer" then? Are they above "executive producer", or are they between "executive producer" and "producer"?
And her is one for the contibution discussion. Do we credit these, and if so as what?

Supervising Producer is the same as Executive in Charge of Production.  He's the senior producer assigned by the studio over several other producers because they usually have several episodes in production at one time, or episodes for a couple of different shows in the works.

That may be true John but, currently we don't profile Supervising Producers according to our rules.

Unless there has been a change that I am unaware of...
