Quick question is this a Box Set with no information in the parent profile or is it a TV series thereby needing all info in the parent as well. Think i know the answer just want confirmation.
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi rorymat
This is the old B/W serial starring Larry "Buster" Crabbe from the 1940's

It is not a tv series... it is actually a movie serial. Something that was popular back in the 1930's where they would show a single chapter of a movie each week. Was also called Cliffhangers as every chapter ended in a "cliffhanger" to keep you coming back. I have a collection of about a dozen movie serials in my collection. None are treated as a TV Series set to my knowledge.

Got a no vote on this profile with this reply
Quote:
This is a single film (in episodes) spread over 3 discs so Cast/Crew should be in this profile.

is this right? is this a film that has been split into episodes i thought it was a series made especially for the cinema which was shown before the main feature.

No, it was never made to be shown as one film.
It was definitely a film serial.

I personally don't know the best way to profile something like this, so the no vote may be right - it's just the reason that's wrong!

Edit: what were you actually wanting to do to the profile?

I removed cast and crew as they are in the child profiles as per the box set rules but have to admit this could be one of those profiles that crosses the rules as it is a series but not a television series.

The problem with these is there is no specific rules for movie serials.. and they can be looked at both ways. as a series of chapters (episodes) or 1 long movie in sections.  I really don't know what the answer is... I haven't worked on any of the movie serial profiles myself yet.

I know personally I would only want the cast and crew in the child profiles... but that is just my opinion.

It wasn't meant to be shown in a single sitting, but it's all one film, released episodically.  I'd keep the cast and crew in the parent.

Yes that was my reasoning why have redundant info in the parent when it is all in the child profiles but of coarse there maybe people who are not using the child's so would want the info in the parent. Think i will resubmit it with cast and crew left in.

Episodes in those old serials were even called "chapters" much like in a book.  So I'd agree that this isn't a box set and all data should be in the "parent" profile.

I think this is one of those situations where the data is best being in both places - that way people can profile them they way they want to.

However IMO, the answer is the same:

1) If it's a series of chapters/episodes it should be treated like a TV series and the cast/crew data in the master/main profile with optional child profiles containing the data also.
2) If it is a long movie split over more than one disc (like LotR extended) then we have cast/crew data in the master/main profile and no child profiles except locally.

Whichever way you look at it the data should be in the master profile (though since the three potential child profiles were sold separately before a boxed release they will exist for anyone who wants them whether you think of it as a movie or a series).

I would personally use separators for each chapter, as per a TV series, but that is another debate I think.
