One of the working assumptions we have in the List of Common Names thread is:

4. If a person gets married and changes their name as a result, the common name does not include it (example Jada Pinkett, not Jada Pinkett Smith)

One problem with this current assumption is that we have a different result in the Dee Wallace Stone poll though,
yet it's in agreement with the Jada Pinkett poll

Question: Should the common name include names that change due to marriage? Always, sometimes, never?

Both those polls were run before we tried to formalise the common name. I for one would be happy to use "Dee Wallace" as the common name if it made things easier, even though I voted the other way on the poll at the time.

Edit: it also worth noting that an awful lot of actresses continue to use their maiden name after marriage anyway. Keeping to this guideline would stop any potential arguments along the line of "Judi Dench was married to Michael Williams so her common name should be Judi Williams"

Yes, both polls were run before the current efforts to use 'credited as' more often.

I noticed last night on IMDb that they list a new marriage for Dee Wallace Stone after the passing of Christopher Stone. I'm also old enough to remember her when she was just credited as Dee Wallace.

I'm fine ignoring changes to names due to marriage, but I don't want to use names from before a person was famous, such as the situation with Susan Sarandon. She was born Susan Tomalin, but has always (as far as I know ) been credited using her (short-lived) married name of Susan Sarandon. I would use Susan Sarandon for her and if she should marry Tim Robbins and change her name to Susan Sarandon Robbins, I would still use Susan Sarandon as her common name.

I completely agree. I think established stage names would always take precedence over real names. Same situation with people like The Rock I guess.
So do you think we should try and extend this guideline to cover people who replace their surname with their spouse's or do you think that's a different topic?

The central question isn't being answered here. I think it's great to discuss all these ideas they are necessary to resolve. BUT where do we obtain this mysterious data, we cannot access the Online database to determine the answer that way, which is the ONLY real answer, and I don't believe any of us own enough films that could be considered statistically representative of the whole. Without THAT answer all of these really good ideas are academic only.

We don't need access to the full database because it doesn't matter if the name used is the most frequently credited or not. It just needs to be agreed by the community and then added to the 'common name' thread so everyone can use it.

Good point Stuart,
you could say that James's thread is our online database, at least for now.

Ken has directed us to use the 'credited as' feature in the absence of an official Invelos lookup.  Whatever common ground we can establish through threads and polls is pretty much the best we can do.

OK. The rest of us will continue to play, with a better aim, (from the polls and guidelines we're developing), and once the dart has hit the board we can all use that for the 'common' name entry.

Not when it actually comes to CHOOSING which of the many possible Priority names it might be, Erik.

We COULD decide to do it randomly as I pointed out elsewhhere

How about something

James Bond 01= Sean Connery
James Bond 02=George Lazenby and so on, after all in their Obituary will all say "best known for playng James Bond"

The no one will ever be able to find anything.

Why do you want to search a database that is probably still 35% IMDB data? You can call that accurate?

But, you are aginst Ken telling us to use it (the feature) and we are trying (with guidelines and polls)? I don't get you Skip.

I absolutely refuse to impose some random choice made by myself based on whatever logic I choose to apply upon everyone, else and I am offendded at being forced to accept whatever random choice by whatever logic choice, even IF I might happen to agree, someone else chooses. I want ONE standarad that we can ALL apply for determining which name to choose. Once I get a standard and i am not talking about all the various format choices being discussed, ONLY then will I participate in the Alias system. I don't do the Wild Wild West. One reason is voting without a standard for choosing the name I have no right, and neither does anyone else, to vote No to any users particular choice for the name. Especially as sloppy as most of the work that accopmanies the choices are.
