I must have missed it, I probablely fell asleep, but why do some user have stars and others don't?

Stars are based on the amount of reputation feedback that's been given to a particular user. You can check the various possible levels by going to My Profiler at the top of the page, then select Reputation. The normal rating is no stars. An overall negative rating is also without a star and is only seen by the user. If a user develops an overall positive rating, stars appear according to the levels shown in the Reputation section.

That is theoretically true, but still I must say I tend to agree with Pauls42.
When a contribution is at stake, it gets personal! If I vote Yes to your contribution then you like me, if I vote No you dislike me, regardless of what I say.

The vote page brings up a detailed explanation; the information is there to read for anyone who submits feedback.

Actually the FAQ has some more detailed explanation on when a negative feedback is warranted, while the negative vote page just says that "negative feedback must be warranted, based on the message below".

Your own user reputation score, and the permission to rate others, depend on accurate feedback, so please ensure this post warrants negative feedback before continuing.

Besides, feedback issues have been discussed on this forum, but not all contributors read Invelos forums.

If this is how you see it then you may need to reevaluate how you think of contributions to the database.  There is nothing personal in contributing profiles to the database.  People vote No on my contributions all the time and I don't take it personally.  They're voting No against the data, not against me.  I look at their reason for the No vote and either fix what they noticed was wrong or if I disagree with their reason I just leave it for the screener to decide (unless they're really wrong then I may send a PM with why I disagree and leave it at that).

When something is up for vote I could care less who's contributing it and whether I like them or not, I look at the data.  If the data is correct I vote Yes.  If the data is wrong I vote No.  I've voted No on a lot of contributions, I sure hope all of those people don't hate me because of it.

In an ideal world, this would be true.

In reality there are several users that use the contribution voting system to carry out personal vendettas.  Sad, but true.

I couldn't agree more!

If people would stop taking every NO-vote as a personal attack, and start focusing more on the reason for the vote, we would have a much better community (and database).

On the other hand, if someone is out on a 'personal vendetta', the new reputation system would work as a perfect deterrent (if used properly)...

Would be interesting to know (proportional to the total contribution votes):

1. the number of negative reputation votes for notes on no votes

2. the number of positive reputation votes for notes on no votes (does this really happen?)

3. the number of negative reputation votes for notes on yes votes (it happened to somebody here!)

This could give us an idea if this supposed problem is really an issue. But even if it's only a minority of users who are affected, it's annoying anyway!

No, I'm not a statistics freak, I'm only curious to see unemotional facts.

Ken,

If you open threads in multiple tabs (at least on IE7), then the vote buttons don't always return you to the place you just came from.  Sometimes I get returned to a different thread (like the one I just posted in for example).

If that doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to provide more accurate instructions on how to recreate the issue.

Happens in Firefox too.

Whoa! I thought I was losing it when that happened to me. (I could still be losing it, but...  ) I experienced that today in FF. My general habit it to view the list of Today's Active Topics and then open tabs for threads I want to check out. I cast a vote today and ended up in a different thread.

Ok, that explains it. I hadn't seen any of these attacks so I didn't understand the reason.

Oh, I'm not alone. This happened to me yesterday using firefox 2.0.0.11. Maybe a cookie issue?

Sounds like the thread to return to is being stored in your session variables (information held on the server to maintain your browsing experience).

Users who use multiple browsing windows have always been a bane to web developers!
