And you should know I agree with you on a different approach Hal... I said so publicly many times. As long as it takes us to change the names by profiles it will take a very long time... if ever.

All I was saying is the idea would work if everyone would actually work together to get it done. But I do think that is a lot to ask. I would still love to see Ken give your idea a chance. I believe we would have a much better linking system then.

Yes, Pete, I know you agree with a change.  I was not directing that at you in particular.

I understand what you're saying, and agree that if everyone did the credits exactly as they should be done and checked the CLT for every one, then we could have a working system at some point.

Hanging around here as long as I have and observing what gets contributed as I do, I have no realistic expectation that people who use this software to catalog their hobby, will ever have the level of discipline that is required to make the "Credited As" system work as designed.

As you know, the system I have proposed would not require the average user to do anything more than enter exactly what they see on the screen, and those of us who are more serious about linking would then be able to create the "linking" table that would do the job.  Being part of the on-line database would mean it would be downloadable to every user who wished to take advantage of that work and would link evry instance of the given names without the need to edit every profile.

Well, enough singing to the choir!

LOL.
all of this just because of some questions from a prospective member :-)

This, of course, begs again the line of reasoning and decisions to implement the primary database with information provided by users and everything else as optional... we can see there are still faults with the manual entry system even if, for the most part there has been a great deal of contribution and effort so far.....

..... but there will still allways be ifs, ands and buts....
- Amazon has all of the correct information as far as title, release date and UPC as well as the starring actors, director and probably also producers of most american movies... and probably a good number of *mainstream* foreign films

still, that would leave us with a lot left to be desired in the way of completing the cast list...
so IMDB is a fairly good source for that, but people are also saying that IMDB has inconsistent data formatting among other things even though for the most part their cast lists are *mostly* thorough...
even beyond that... it still leaves holes for people that are interested in having an ENTIRE credits list with all of the pre and post production and photography and costume crews and so on and so forth and so forth :-)

it could go on and on....
technically speaking... it would be *possible* to put together the most uber of all uber film data population scripts of all time..... to intelligently gather and parse data from multiple sources to have the most complete *automated* method of database construction and management....

*shrug* just my nickel...

Even with the problems that come with it... I for one prefer the way we do it now as it is the only way to be sure it is accurate with the DVD release. But hey... that's me.

Reproduce typos is a rule that doesn't seem to be logical at all but then again, I haven't been doing this since day one of the software :-)

Who wants to have a Leonard Nimoy and a Leonard Nemoy in their collection? LOL :-)

Don't worry, it seems highly illogical to many of us. Let's not even get into the difficulties with various romanization methods for Asian actors (oops, I just did  )

Seriously though, I can assure you that this program and rule set still have some evolving to do and it will never be possible for Invelos to make every customers 100% happy due to the varying opinions but I can safely say after having tested and used quite a few other similar programs that DVDP is the one I'm most satisfied with.

Other users are also right in stating that the 'credited as' feature can, for many actors with spelling errors, be a reasonable solution to allow both:
- correct cross-linking
- entering the cast exactly as they are credited, with errors and all
It doesn't work for all cast members so some local tinkering will be needed if you want a fully working linking database, but at least the online does a lot of the work already for you.

At least, that's my opinion

We could always do some two-part harmony. But we might get egged.

Simple association is still the right answer, i think.

I've used DVDProfiler since way back when.  Even version 2.5x was easy to use compared to Movienizer.

I tried using your other choice, Movienizer.  I had trouble entering titles into the program.  I didn't like the fact you had to put the disc in the drive when entering the title by upc code.

I'm spoiled by the ease of doing the same thing in DVDProfiler.  I would recommend DVDProfiler.

Floorwalker,
thanks for your feedback. At least in my experience, I've never had to put any disc in the drive when entering titles into Movienizer either by movie title or upc *shrug* , at least not in the past 7 or 8 weeks that I have been searching around... in any case, I've got DVD Profiler now and am gearing up to do my data entry... just been busy lately..

and I sure don't... I'm perfectly happy with the "credited as" system who works perfectly as intended. The problem isn't this method, but the "credit lookup tools" who is use for the common name because a lot of old profiles had incorectly entered cast/crew.

It's not that hard or complicated to make it work in our individual database when we do the cast/crew correctly. We certainly don't need an obligatary table name from the database that will prevent us to costumize the cast/crew of our personal database...

For one, I sure don't need a simple and impose system because of Joe Regular.
