You can now get a high-end Panasonic 3D plasma with a 3D-Blu-ray player, three sets of glasses and Avatar for what I paid for my slightly smaller lower-mid Westinghouse TV three and a half years ago. As soon as I pay of my house next year, I'm getting a new TV. |

| | Posted: | | | | I too joined the Blu-ray club this Christmas. I got a Sony BDP-S470 as a Christmas gift. I still have an 8 year old JVC 32" CRT but I've had a few Blu-ray discs for a while now due to Blu-ray DVD bundles. I haven't had a chance to watch any Blu-ray movies yet but am looking forward to it. I haven't decided how many of my 600+ DVDs I plan to replace with Blu-ray, but I'm assuming it will be less than 10%. I guess I'll have to wait and see once I get a huge HDTV what the quality difference is. | | | JAFO

| | Posted: | | | | I also just joined the Blu-Ray club. Before I got my BR player I bought some recent films that were Blu-Ray/DVD Combo packs just to future proof my collection. Now that I got a BR player I don't have to go and re-buy these again on Blu-Ray.
I did a Blu-Ray/DVD comparison of Avatar and even on my standard def. TV the Blu-Ray is much more sharper and detailed. I can see the detail in the painting of the military craft. The DVD lacks the detail and when compared to the Blu-Ray appears much more softer and just lacks detail. This really surprised me.
Regarding what titles of my collection I will double-dip and buy again on Blu-Ray, well I think I will limit it to Science-Fiction and Action films for the majority of them. Certain classics I may buy too. Comedies isn't something that I think I would re-buy on Blu-Ray. Same with certain dramas. TV Series too is something that I think I will just stick with the DVD for. |

My Sony DVD player is less than two years old, and it seems it has more features related to DVD playback (more extensive remote buttons), plus it remembers where I stopped playing a disc, even after a reboot. | | | JAFO

While there would be a way to make my Panasonic BD-Player region-free for DVDs, there is non for UOP, and those unskippable trailers and other stuff really annoys the hell out of me, so DVDs still go in the DVD-Player. It's an odd setup now, since my receiver doesn't have any HDMI support so the PS3 is connected directly to the TV via HDMI while the optical audio goes through the DVD input on the receiver. The old DVD player is still connected, to the DVD in of the receiver, but its audio is now only connected through the six discrete analog inputs which were mainly used previously for DVD Audio discs. My receiver has two DVD settings, DVD and DVD Multi, where the only difference is the audio inputs that are used. DVD-Multi uses analog inputs only (designed for DVD Audio playback), while the regular DVD setting uses the optical or coax input. So, now if I want to use the DVD changer, I just switch to DVD Multi, which still passes the component video to the TV. For Blu-ray, I use the DVD setting. I just have to change the TV from HDMI to Component & back when needed. I'm now starting to look for a new receiver that's more up to date with HDMI support. It has zoom function, which I use to look at credits more closely. Sadly the new Blu-Ray I bought doesn't have that feature, which would mean that I won't be adding credits from Blu-Rays since I can't zoom in to read them. |

I was due for a new dvd reader and I was unable to find a Phillips reader so I got the BR reader because it isn't costly (88 $CAN) and easy to make multi region (wich is already done). If you think that Blu-ray is only a slight or no improvement from DVD on an HDTV, you are likely sitting too far away from the TV to take advantage of the fact you have an HDTV, or the converse, your screen is too small for your viewing distance. (Yes, there is a science between screen size and seating distance when building a home theater, even in your living room). |

Blu-ray actually has 6 times the density of NTSC and five time the density of PAL. Audio quality is much better as well. |
