FWIW, my experience has been the same as vjvl51's - it made no difference what order I installed/uninstalled DVD Profiler and eMusic Download Manager, DVD Profiler breaks as soon as eMusic Download Manager (4 or 5) is installed and works again as soon as it's uninstalled, reboot or no.  The only difference for me is that DVD Profiler never started working again on its own.

Although it's interesting, I'm not sure about the common files theory.  If the dll (or whatever) were installed in some common/shared directory, wouldn't that leave it "missing" at the later uninstall?  Unless Windows is somehow smart enough to return an original/earlier version after an uninstall.  Just thinking out loud.

At this point I'm happy enough with the way things are that I'll probably leave it alone, at least for a while.  But I'll keep mediadogg's suggestions in mind, in case I get ambitious and try to fix things further on my own.

Both of your points are valid. Windows is so 'smart" now that sometimes I think it gets itself confused (along with the rest of us).

Imagine this silly analogy: You buy a new advanced hammer and go to replace the old one in the toolbox, but your wife is using it. So you make a note to replace it during the next housecleaning.

Now imagine all the funny scenarios created if everytime you houseclean, your wife happens to be using the old hammer. Maybe you make a new note or update the old one. What if she notices and throws it away herself and then starts using the new one without mentioning it? What if the new hammer doesn't work the way your wife expects it, and her project fails?

Now substitute "dll" for "hammer", "reboot" for"houseclean", "registry" for "toolbox", "crash" for "project fail", "cache" for "note", etc. I think you get the idea, and you could see how it sometimes takes multiple reboots, or how things could get crazy if a note is lost, or the wrong hammer is thrown away, etc.

(BTW substitute anything you want for "wife" in the story, e.g. "lol cat"  )

I'll follow-up with you. I asked for an update before the holiday's, and didn't hear back. Let me get in touch with them again to see if there has been an update.

Just an update.  I haven't heard back from eMusic but ...  for various reasons, I had to reinstall my laptop today.  I did my normal - updated Windows, installed printers and then Office 2007.  I installed DVD Profiler and then eMusic Download Manager version 4.  Rebooted again and downloaded a song using the Download Manager and then tried to open DVD Profiler.  It worked!!!!

I don't know what has changed but ....  I was pleasantly surprised.  The only thing different in my DVD install was after the install, I went to options and set all the files to D drive instead of C drive.  Since it is working, I'm not changing things.  Maybe eMusic has changed something - I really don't know.

weslymoore. please let me know if it suddenly starts working for you as well.

Thanks for the update!  I'll give it a try on my machine, see how things go and report back.  Fingers crossed!

I have to chuckle. You completely reinstalled your OS and all the applications, and you think "the only" thing that is different has to do with your directory assignments.

Trust me, so much has changed, not even Microsoft could figure it out. Masses of registry entries, 10's of thoussands of files, various hardware drivers, user settings, the list goes on.

What you did was probably the altogether best cure for many many mysterious problems people have - it's just that they don't want to take the time and effort to do it.

You had the good judgement and patience to "wipe the slate" and now you are reaping the benefits.

Let's hope it doesn't happen to you again!

No Mediadogg, I didn't mean to imply that changing the directory settings did anything different.  I only meant that changing the hard drive was the only thing I did different.  With all the different Windows updates, etc, it would take someone smarter than me to figure out why the combination now works but didn't the last time I installed (I think I did about 4 installs trying to figure out why it didn't work the first time).  For all I know, eMusic changed their download manager since I always redownload stuff like that to ensure I have the lastest version.  I always install in the same basic order - Windows updates - printers - Office 2007 - then other programs, in this case DVD Profiler then DLM, then ....

I basically wanted to know if weslymoore was still having issues because there is no point in my following up with eMusic if his DVD Profiler is now working with the DLM.

Thanks for the update!  I tried re-installing the currently available eMusic DLM, but no change for me.  The same DLM version as before is installed - 5.0.5.1102 - and the same errors subsequently occur in DVD Profiler.  It looks like eMusic has not refreshed their DLM, so whatever changed for the better must have been in your own installation.  I'm highly unlikely to take the path of complete rebuild, as my current workaround isn't that much trouble, and hopefully eMusic will come through with an update sooner rather than later.

I am having the same problems with a clean install.  I do have eMusic on my system.  I will try a couple of the items below and let you know what works if anything.  Good that it runs on my old XP machine. Matt
