Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – Visual Effects ... Mike Ellis

I don't have Mike Ellis in my profile of Goblet. Is it a valid credit?

Nope,
just checked myself:
Header is "Visual Effects by Double Negative", which is followed by a looong list of names (among them "Mike Ellis") which nevertheless have no specific role attached -> invalid.

Timecode (BluRay: 02:34:48)
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

"Visual Effects" is a valid credit, of course. No matter what company Mike Ellis worked for.

Sure it is,
but please note that the credit is NOT "Visual Effects by Mike Ellis" but "Visual Effects by Double Negative" followed by a list of their employees.

It's not about wording, but semantics. People ("company employees" as you call them) do the Visual Effects. I give them credit, I will contribute and vote accordingly.

And put yourself outside the contribution rules by this.
Please compare the Crew-Chart which explicitly demands specific "Individual Credits" for the Visual Effects section.

"Visual Effects by Company Name" can be many things, but for sure is no Individual Credit.

So Visual Effects by
John Doe 1
John Doe 2
is allowed?

And
Visual Effects by ABC VFX
John Doe 1
John Doe 2
isn't allowed?

seems illogical thinking to me.

kind of like

Additional Photography
John Doe 1 DoP
John Doe 2 PSM
is not allowed

but Additional VFX by ABC VFX
John Doe 1 VFX Supervisor
John Doe 2 DFX Supervisor
is allowed

but Additonal VFX by ABC VFX
John Doe 1 DoP
John Doe 2 Make-up
isn't.

Correct (Even though this is heavily disputed)

Quote:
but Additional VFX by ABC VFX
John Doe 1 VFX Supervisor
John Doe 2 DFX Supervisor

IMO incorrect (But as above, the tracing of Additional Whatever if followed by a valid Individual Credit is disputed)

Quote:

John Doe 1 DoP
John Doe 2 Make-up

See above.
BTW:
Would you enter
"Song Title"
John Doe3 Producer ?

But I think the point of the rule is, that if we only have a listing of the employees of a company we can not know what specific job they did.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

I don't see any producer credit in my examples above.

all I see is a hodgepodge of what is or isn't allowed, depending on who wants to contribute it, is how the community votes on what they think is correct data.

over the past few years the grey areas have been worked to death. Now who really knows what to contribute.

In this case there is no grey area.
If John Doe has no individual credit (as listed in the Crew-Chart), but is only credited as member of VFX-Company A we do not track him.

You may not like this, but this is what the rule says.
"Individual Credits" is even bolded, I'm not quite sure how this could possibly be interpreted any other way.

List individual credits only, not company name credits. Exception: If a company name heads a group of crew, use the Group divider to enter the company name.

and that is what Double Negative does, it heads a group of crew. .

and for the past 5 years I've seen these exact same credits contributed with numerous yes votes.

Could you please be bothered to check the specific part of the Crew-Chart.

What do you think may be the reason that the VFX section alone has specifically mentioned ""Individual Credits"?
Is it by any chance possible that it is implemented to prevent mass-entering of unspecified crew?

and for the past 7 years (or so) I have seen countless of IMDb carbon copies being accepted to the database (Heck! I've even seen contributions being declined that tried to correct IMDb data)... this doesn't mean that this data is correct.

EDIT:
Following your "logic" to the end would allow us to enter anything as long as it is listed under a "VFX by Company" - Header, after all they all worked for the VFX company, who cares that the person was only an intern who brought coffee.

You are assuming that they are listing an intern. Unless you have first hand knowledge by working beside them on the film, you don't know.
This is the same as Special Effects with a list of names following, especially when there is a SFX Coordinator, SFX Foreman and then a list of Special Effects, I know they are the rank and file workers for special effects but they still get contributed.

In fact I am not assuming anything.
It is your point that individual credits are irrelevant if the header is "VFX by Company Name".
So if they are irrelevant the only logical conclusion is  that interns are allowed for DVDProfiler too (provided they are credited below this header)and so are IT-Techs and what else you may find credited.

Strangely though, you seem to refuse my main question:
