There is no precedent that I am aware of and, if you use the order from the front cover, it doesn't matter how it is listed anywhere else.

This really shouldn't be this hard.

The precedent is Blu-ray/DVD combo packs. It's essentially the same issue with different formats. If we don't care about the order things are written on the package there, which should do so here? It would create confusing, inconsistent rules.

We do care about the order.  I know there are cases, like Disney, that had releases specifically towards DVD market that came in DVD cases, those would also have DVD as the parent and the blu-ray as the child.

Unfortunately this is not correct.  The way the program is set and rules written, the HD version is first.

I think it's important to have norms about what takes precedence, otherwise it gets really arbitrary.

Why should the 3d version get priority over the 2d version.  Wouldn't it be just as viable to establish a rule, that the 2d version is primary in all cases.  That would be consistent.

With the lack of rules stating othersisae, the version listed first is the parent profile of these combo sets. (excluding DVD per the rules, and digital copy because of the program)

If 3d is first, then that is the parent.  Same with 2d HD or 4k.

It should be that simple.

No they don't.... not according to the rules...

Rules Quote:
Quote:
Sets containing the same film on multiple media types (such as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack) are to be entered as a normal profile for the main media type (Blu-ray in this example), with all included media types checked. A combo which includes HD media (HD-DVD, Blu-ray) as well as DVD should use the details from the HD media in the main profile. However, you may add an additional profile by Disc ID for the DVD content and add this profile to the Box Set contents for the Blu-ray profile.

See the part I put in bold. I always felt that rule was wrong and always felt it should be the way you said... but unfortunately it is not.

Several reasons: That's not the norm that's been established. Ken ruled on this a while back, but unfortunately the search function here doesn't work well. Also, the 3D disc is what distinguishes the 3D release from the 2D release. If you make 2D the primary, the 2D and 3D release will be identical except for cover scans and children, which seems counter-intuitive.

And, as mentioned before, the current rules establish a hierarchy for BD/DVD combos with BD taking precedence. It makes more sense to expand this hierarchy then to come up with a mixed rule where sometimes you determine the primary disc by what's written on the cover and sometimes there's a concrete rule and you ignore the cover, depending what formats are included. I suggest a hierarchy of UHD->3D BD->2D BD->DVD.

Whether it be DVD, Blu-ray or 3D first, I always list the 3D as parent and the others as children. My parent only reflects what is on the 3D version. The children each reflect what is on them only. If it's Disney with the DVD primary and in a DVD case, I still list the Blu-ray as parent(s) and the DVD(s) as children, each reflecting what is on each disc. This means a lot of my collection has locks and can't be contributed. I want to know what each disc has to offer, not a combination of all discs, that doesn't make any sense to me. I want to know what's on the 3D disc not the combo pack.

Just my 2 pennies for what it's worth.

Per Rules High Def has always been parent profile. Question is what to do when there is 2 high def profiles. But the rules already show that order on case doesn't matter.
