Quote: The "TV Show" tab isn't able to scan the page I've browsed to via the "Browser" tab. Running "Cast/Crew Edit 2 Version 2.1.15.1". What's keeping DVD Profiler alive for me isn't Invelos.com. It's Cast/Crew Edit 2. Invelos could close shop tomorrow. I could care less. I'm perfectly content working locally and host my own phpDVDProfiler based website. Having to manually add cast and crew data to new profiles, now that's a deal breaker. I've got better things to do with my life. I don't care whether the given IMDB data is accurate of not. The moment "Cast/Crew Edit 2" is working again I'll be submitting a generous donation. Hopefully an update is in the works.
Nothing stays forever, and we need to assume Cast/Crew Edit 2 likely won't either. If you can create a website, you may have enough skills to create your own solution, like I have. I use "web-scraping" to automate the extraction of cast and crew info from the IMDb website. DJ Doena probably uses a similar technique for his plugin. This technique is highly dependent on the structure and placement of the HTML code. So every time IMDB changes its web code, he has to change his plugin. And I have to modify my code too when that happens. It just happened yesterday and it took me about an hour. And from I've seen, DJ Doena also doesn't need much time to do it (when he has time, of course). HTML code is often very structural, and it's often not overly difficult for a capable coder to extract info from it. Btw, I've made by own movie catalog tool (see my post from another thread), so I'm also not too dependent on DVD Profiler. | Posted: Topic Replies: 781, Topic Views: 72537 | | I was fortunate not to have bought too many Warner DVDs in that period. Below are the only problematic Warner DVDs still in my collection that were made during 2006-2008. I go by the official release date. I might've bought some of them after 2008, but if they were manufactured during 2006-2008, I would still get a rotten disc:
American Pastime (2007 indie film) - unplayable Forbidden Hollywood Collection 1 - both of 2 discs unplayable Forbidden Hollywood Collection 2 - disc 1 unplayable, disc 2-3 fine Hamlet (1996) - haven't checked The Maltese Falcon (1941 & 1931 versions) - disc 2 unplayable, disc 1 and 3 fine NFL New York Giants: The Road to Super Bowl XLII, 5-disc set -- haven't checked NFL Super Bowl XLII: New York Giants Championship - unplayable Superman: The Movie (1978) -- all 4 discs unplayable Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? -- haven't checked
Most of these titles I have already upgraded to Blu-ray and/or streaming. The only title I lost is "Waterloo Bridge" (1931) in Forbidden Hollywood Collection 1, because this title is not on streaming nor on Blu-ray. The only way for me to see it now is from bootleg YouTube uploads. | Posted: Topic Replies: 7, Topic Views: 9481 | | Quoting Matt788:
Quote: In the video, Alec mentions that MPEG-2 compression technology has improved since its release in the mid-1990s. This could explain why smaller files are now possible. Several amendments and adaptations have been made. Source: MPEG-2 Wikipedia
Those were updates to the specs and not necessarily improvements. The wiki says the latest update was in 2013, but that was a repackaging of old updates up to 2007. So even if improvements were made, we are talking about mid-2000s quality here (almost two decades ago). The core MPEG2 compression is likely never to change. What's improved are encoders and better PC speed that allow higher compression and quality to be done in less time. | Posted: Topic Replies: 4, Topic Views: 3064 | | | DVD uses the old MPEG2 compression, which has not been improved since it is legacy technology. Only Blu-ray, 4K BLu-ray, and streaming videos use the newer tech such as h.264 (AVC) and h.265 (HEVC), which indeed yield better compression. Therefore, re-encoding dual-layer to single-layer DVD undoubtedly reduces picture quality. But then again, we are lucky to get any physical media at all. | Posted: Topic Replies: 4, Topic Views: 3064 | |
