I do not mean to be rude here but, for all of the free users out there, Why do you feel that a software developer, like Ken Cole,  owe you something for FREE especially web hosting of your DVD collection that you have not paid for.

I am sure Ken has invested a great deal of money, as well as time and effort, in all of the Invelos servers  and other equipment that support DVD profiler. In fact, he has recently paid to acquire IVS from his partners, Some of whom sued him. KEN COLE IS SIMPLY AN INDIVIDUAL WHO CHOOSES TO SHARE HIS EFFORTS WITH THE DVD COLLECTING COMMUNITY. Processing thousands of contributions  for free is entirely unreasonable. He should be properly rewarded for his efforts. If you cannot afford $30 to support his efforts then you should not be wasting time in these forums and probably not have access to a computer at all. GET A JOB AND STOP WHINING.

For those of you wondering I am a retired/disabled individual living on a fixed income and, yes, I have paid my fee for use of the program. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

To Skipnet50:

Although I do not always agree with your methods, you have tried to do your part to make  the program and the community better. Keep up the good work but dial down the sarcasm about 10%. I admit I enjoy it sometimes,  but others, not so much.

To Ken Cole:

I would highly recommend eliminating posting access by free users to the forums or a least confining it to maybe the Technical Support forum in a specific pinned thread. There is enough information out there that free users should not clog up your new hard drives with repeated posts of the same questions over and over. It is bad enough that  some of us,  including myself on occasion, ask the same stupid questions over and over. We all make mistakes and get a little over zealous sometimes. I realize that free use in some cases promotes paid use but, enough is enough. Please put an end to the madness.

Thank You,

Sorry for the rant, now back to your regularly scheduled silence.

I have a suggestion about how we could deal with those freeloaders in the future, whenever they start whining about not getting their BMW for free.
Instead of replying and flaming them, not more than one or two factual answers about how to pay for the program should be posted and then the thread should be ignored.

On the other hand, flaming can be veery funny...

If people didn't read their automobile instruction manual to find out a simple safety factor like where to find or what the tire pressure should be set at, what makes you think they will read a program help file of a program or the contribution rules.

I favor eliminating forum access completely for free users. In my view, they are not entitled to technical support since they are not customers.

A lot of companies use community forums for free user tech support where other users answer their question.

I have absolutely no problem with the way Ken is doing things. It allows free users enough Program acces to be able to evaluate whether they like it or not and then it's time to either buy it or not. Forum access is a good thing too; it gives some entertainment from time to time, but it also allows them to see that we are a large and active Community and they can find what we thnk of the Product.

We may all chafe at the seemingly "silly" questions posted by the newbies, but I think they should be allowed to read and post here.

Even if they don't have full access to the program and online collection, any questions or problems they do have can - hopefully - be answered in the forums. Also, if there are known issues with various aspects of the program, they can find out without thinking there's something wiggy and then panicking.

I guess if I would change anything, there should be a dedicated up-to-date FAQ in both the program and on the forms, with a link to said FAQ directly on the main site page.

Skip,

I am sorry if you thought that I assumed you had a problem with the way Ken operates things. That was not my intention at all. I was only suggesting that there are other options. For the record, I personally voted for the third option a special forum for free users, even though my post was rather cynical in nature.

Thanks for the response.

If anyone cares,

My initial post was going to be a response to the "not working" thread, and many others like it, but, I honestly believed a poll would be more productive than trying to add to an argument. I am sure that if Ken sees a poll with several hundred responses going in one direction he would surely reconsider his position on any issue that may arise. That is obviously not in demand by an overwhelming majority here.

Regards,
Brian

I thought that if we non-noobs gave fair/honest answers to noob questions, they might like the atmosphere enough to pop for owning the program and perhaps contributing to the database maintenance. Or we could treat them poorly and they'll go away without putting up their $30 or add anything to the db...
