In that case, Daruma, sarcasm is not what I intended. Or do you feel that example I gave was designed to wound?

So what if I change my question to "Is irony bad?"

I guess we have a difference in opinion what is "designed to wound", then. But I accept your opinion and I'll try to be more careful in the future.

I didn't get a chance to read your original reply to the quoted sarcasm before your reply got moderated, but I'm lead to believe that it was "Grow a brain". I may be wrong, but I don't think that phrase falls under the category of sarcasm.

Of course there is nothing amusing about it and kudos to anyone who strives to adjust his/her behavior to what is accepted in the community.

I general I enjoy sarcasm and I think it can be as funny as it is disarming. However, the important this is that the person to whom you direct your sarcasm clearly understands this. That really depends on the situation and person you address. For example, my wife never catches sarcasm or cynicism since it's non-existent in her culture. When we were first dating, I accidentally hurt her on a few occasions because of that. So, I never use sarcasm with her anymore.

Especially in online situations you need to be careful since the written word conveys much less the intent of the message that the spoken word (no intonation, no facial expressions). Therefor in online situations I try to be extra careful although I've made errors in the past in that regard myself.

So I don't think it's a bad thing perse but you need to be careful with it.
