 | | Posted: | | | | | | | The things that bug me with US TV is the continual moving the program schedules, the continued shortening of the episode length and the lead characters hopping in bed.
Most of today's one hour shows are less than 40 minutes by the time you subtract the credits. That is about 20 minutes of commercials per hour. I just profiled Flashpoint season 4, 42.3 minutes average per episode. Just finished watching Police Woman, season 2, 1975, 50.2 minutes per episode. I have enjoyed the NHZ Network European crime dramas that are 90 to 100 minutes long.

A pretty good show that came out the same time as The Untouchables , 50.3 minutes per episode, but didn't rate as well was The Lawless Years, 1959, a half hour show, 25.9 minutes per episode and it would have been much better if it was an hour show and had spent some money on production.

It seems like the writers run out of gas and have to have the leads jump into bed. I don't want to watch a crime drama with bickering of somebody's marriage problems unless it has something to do with the crime.
A good example, Twin Peaks the creators left and the show tanked. Today's Bones is another.
If the show started out with married couples that is different, McMillan & Wife, it tanked when Susan Saint James left the show.

Studies show management cause 85% of the problems and there is also some egotistical executive that thinks he knows more than the creators of a show.
