How do we credit "Created by" in TV-series? Any ideas or viewpoints on this?

I would credit them as "Original characters", but it somehow seems out of place...

Ideally, Ken will include it a Created by Credit in the Future. We have to wait and see. As you noted it can be a sticky wicket, I would USUALLY include it in OCB but there are ocassions, such as Series Developed for Television by, when that would not be appropriate.

Created by is one of those that could really go either way "Original Characters By" or "Original Material By".

Examples would be a TV series in the US that was baised on UK TV series, where the US crew credited themselves as Created by.  What did the US crew really contribute? I would find it difficult to give them Original Material By since really all they did was adapt the show for US audience.

But, if you have an original TV series that wasn't basied from another medium Movie or TV Series and you see created by then this would lead you to think it was Original Material by.  Since they may have developed the entire series.

Like Skip says Ideally we should have a Created by credit for writing.

"Original Characters By" is good enough for "created by" IMO. We don't need more crew roles in this case.

You need to do some actual work in this area, there are plenty of times when its not appropriate and does not add any clarity.

I don't use "Created by" credits at all in my TV profile contributions. IMHO this does not belong to any of the current categories and I will leave it out until Ken provides an updated for this in the future.

How would you handle this type of credit

"Some Name" UK Original Series Created by John Smith
"Some US Series Name" Created by John Doe
Story by John Doe
Screenplay by Jane Doe

I would give this one "original characters"
Quote:
"Some US Series Name" Created by John Doe
This one "original material"
Quote:
Story by John Doe
This one "writer"
Quote:
Screenplay by Jane Doe

And "screenwriter"

But that's just me

Sorry but, Story by should always be Original Material by.

But, just to illustrate you gave the UK Created by = Original Characters and the US Created by = Original Material.  This goes to show that Created by isn't clear cut as it seems or we would like it to be.

I think when it comes to TV series "Story by" is a bit of a grey area. The story has still been written especially for the screen, it's just not a screenplay - that's why I chose "written by".

But you're right, there's a number of ways they can be credited and none of them will be completely right or wrong!

Finally somebody gets it, the definitions for Profiler are NEVER going to satisfy EVERYONE, but they are the definitions that we use. Users are always free to do whatever they wish in their local database, but if it departs from Profiler standards it remains LOCAL.
