How does the Star Rating System for contributions work?  Say, in order to have one Yellow Star, do you have to contribute 100 items with a 90% (or better) acceptance rate, or what?

It has no impact on the Contribution system.

The Reputation system tracks feedback from fellow users on posts you've made, including forum posts and commented contribution votes. Additionally, forum rule violations can affect the reputation score.

The Reputation system

Low Rating
Account temporarily restricted to 15 posts per day, including commented contribution votes.

Lower Rating
Account temporarily restricted to 5 posts per day, including commented contribution votes.

Very Low Rating
Account temporarily blocked from posting, including contribution, contribution voting, and forum posts. Blocks last between 24 and 72 hours depending on the specific reputation score.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

as others have said the rating system is a comment on the post - e.g. rude or abusive posts should be rated as negative wheras positive (helpful) type posts should be rated positively.


These ratings are nothing to do with contributions

However... contributions can be rated as well!

If you have a list of titles to vote on on-screen and you click the icon in front of the film's title (looks like a sheet of paper), then you can rate the contribution (notes).

This is independent from voting on the contribution itself (although it would be mighty strange to be inconsistent...). In this sense pauls42 is right.
