Hi, everyone!

I'm new here and I was wondering: wouldn't it be great if there were more 'genre-options'? It happens a lot, when I add DVD's, that I can't decide which 3 to choose. Sometimes there are a lot more options, 4 or 5. Anyone else has this 'problem'?

Hi and Welcome,

To answer your question:  I have never felt the need for more than three.  If it's no problem for the programmers to do, then I don't see why not.  I would like the genres listed for a DVD to be as accurate as they can possibly be.  Sometimes I have selected comedies only to find some movies listed that definitely aren't comedic in any sense of the word.

My two cents for what it's worth. Again Welcome.

I also think three is more than enough, because the more genres you can assign to a movie the more discussions we get whether they are correct or not. If you need more than the standard three, you just need to use tags.

Mmm. I see your point. I guess I was just fantasizing a bit. Like: type 'Christmas' and you get all your Christmas movies. A bit over the top, I guess... :-)

Ehm, Martin, what do you mean with 'use tags'? Sounds interesting. (Mag in 't Nederlands, hahaha!)

I agre3e with Martin, RoWi. He hit the nail right on the head.

Genre are totally subjective, one man's pearl, might be another's rose. You can add as many Genre choices as you need through the Tag system, which is both hierarchial and searchable and also completely personal. They are not Contributable, thus there is no need for discussions about whether its a Pearl or a Rose, which as you will see once you have been around here awhile will always result in circular arguments and places we don't want to go to. Right, Martin.

Welcome.

I would like "Television" to be a separate check box, not a Genre.
Of course you can also use tags for that, in your local database.

Go to the menu Tools > Edit Tags > Add Tag > enter "MyGenres" (for instance), then Add Child Tag, enter all the Genre names you would like to use, even Genres that are not listed in the default Genre list.
Finally click OK to save.

When you edit a profile, click on "Personal Information", then go to the "Tags" list on the right hand side and tick all the Genres that apply to that profile, whatever number of Genres you like.
This way you can personalize the Genres in your local database and use it as a workaround to enter more than three genres, if you want to.
Your Tags will not be uploaded when you contribute your profile to the online database.

In het Nederlands heb ik het "labels" genoemd.
