When is a contribution really a contribution?

I notice when updating my online collection that the software is uploading profiles, and in the contribution rules it asks not to make nit-pick changes unless as part of a collection update.  However, I am noticing "new" contributions coming from the databse update and up-for-vote on titles that should already include this information from my collection update many weeks ago.  Checking my online collection, they do seem to already have everything ... except the images.

So how much, if anything, is actually contributed-contributed on a collection update and how much do I still need to go through a manual contribution for?

The online collection storage is completely distinct from the contributed profiles that are part of the master database.

Hmm, is there some way of searching for, sorting, or filtering DVDs that need profile contrtibutions without manually setting up tags ahead of time?

Not without special mental powers.

The only way to determine if a profile needs updates is to compare the data on the disc with what is in the profile.  If you find a discrepancy you can update the profile and submit the change for a vote from other owners (You are aware of the Contribution Rules i assume.)

Sometimes you can look at a profile and the errors are screamingly obvious, sometimes it's a subtle spelling error.

It's a user built profile database so there isn't an ideal to compare against in order to find flaws.  We are building that ideal database.

I've noticed a few cast errors when clicking on the cast list of a movie I just watched and seeing what else the actors are in that I have. Sometimes I don't see a title I know I have, and see that title has them with wrong spelling or an alias, so I correct and link them then submit. That's also where I'll start going over the disc with the wrong entry to see if there's more errors, as they usually run in packs, esp. cast from imdb.

I hated to see those letters too, but some more obscure titles in my collection still have info from them. I'm trying to rid myself and the database of it.

If the 'Slowly I turn step by step, inch by inch' is a reference to Scatterbrain's "Don't Call Me Dude", you've offically rose countless cool points in my book (like Stuntman Mike, I do carry a book! )!

That works, bigdaddy, but it was actually a reference to an old Abbott and Costello schtick.

Which is probably what that part of the song is a reference to, so in a roundabout kinda way, it's all the same.

I know it's a skit that Abbott & Costello did, but I believe it's an old vaudeville routine and may not have been original with A & C.  I seem to recall it was also used in a Three Stooges film (the trigger phrase being "Niagra Falls") but it was probably around in vaudeville for a long time even before that.

According to the Niagra Falls Reporter, comic Joey Faye claimed authorship to the routine.

I think this point needs slight clarification ... my question is not if there some way to mystically know which profiles are wrong and in need of corrected information.  What I mean is, do we have a way to only filter/select the titles with a lit indicator noting that changes were made, and it thinks I still need to contribute back into the database?  Short of going through to manually check and tag them "in advance."

What changes and who is "it"?

I confess i'm still trying to figure out where you are in the contribution process.

Do you have some profiles you updated and hadn't contributed the updates immediately and now want an automated way to find those profiles so you can contribute them to the database?  I'm unaware of an automated method though there is an icon (a hand hold a gold disc), in most layouts i presume, that is lit when there changes you have made but have not been submitted back to the database.

I think you want to use the "Refresh Updated Profiles from Invelos" in the Online menu. (also the tool bar button: Discs with a Green Arrow pointing down on it) This will download the latest online list, and open a popup window with every disc in your collection that has updated information.

Once that is opened, you can either blindly accept what is there by clicking OK or, as I and many other people do, highlight each profile 1 by 1 and click the Preview Changes button at the bottom of the window.  This will open another window with the comparison skin, which will show the changes between your existing profile and the newly available one. You can accept all or part of the new data, by ticking the appropriate radio buttons on that screen.

NOTE: on the first popup, if there are check marks in the boxes, clicking OK will download new data that will overwrite any field not locked. Many people begin by right-clicking then "Select None" to uncheck them all. That way, if you do not get through the entire list, clicking OK will only update the profiles you actually reviewed. If your profiles are completely locked, nothing is checked when you start.

If you have not tried it, goodguy's Profile Comparison Plus is a more advanced comparison screen. See this thread for info on it.

If you have information that you do not wish to have changed, you can lock all or part of each profile. This helps insure you don't accidentally accept a change that might overwrite your local profile of, for example, the cast list sorted to your preference rather than the alphabetical one from a film's credits.

Hope this helps.

(emphasis added) It would be preferable to individually visiting every single profile.  I have since set up a pair of tags (to update and to contribute) for handling this on anything new that crosses my path.  However, there are still a fair number left to check, and the program does occasionally get quite slow on navigation.  Not sure if it is my overscanned covers or just something that happens when left open for too long, and my experiments in changing the layout (such as turning various windows, like cover preview, off) only made it worse.
