I'm working on the Crew credits for "Total Recal" and I've run into a snag on the writing credits. Here are the credits and how I've dealt with them:

Inspired by the short story "We can Remember it for You Wholesale" by Phillip K. Dick
Here I've credited Phillip K. Dick as Original Characters By

Screen Story by: Ronald Shusett & Dan O'Bannon and Jon Povill
Here I've credted each with Writer

Screenplay by: Ronald Shusett & Dan O'Bannon and Gary Goldman
Here I've credted each with Screenwriter

Is this correct?

I would have done original material for the first 2 groups and screenwriter for, well, the screenwriters.

Agree with mdnitoil; Dick's story is definitely another medium from which the story is adapted, that's definitely OMB. It would be nice to have a separate "story by" credit for the second group to differentiate, but in this case also OMB. And screenwriter is definitely right.

I'll expand on my thought process, since I'm bored.

Definitely an original material for Phillip K. Dick.  The final product was inspired by his short story but we are given no indication that the writers merely lifted his character names.  Since he was given full screen credit, the implication is that enough basic plot points were lifted to necessitate the credit.  After that, 3 guys worked the short story into a feature length story.  Finally, this was turned into an actual screenplay.  So everyone contributed original material until it was finally turned into a screenplay.

The original characters credit most typically occurs in sequels.  It's also usually very explicit in the credits.  Written by is also explicit in the credits.  The implication of written by is that the people credited conceived an original story and generated a screenplay by themselves.

Told ya I needed help .

I kinda figured Dick's story should of been OMB but the way I read the credit it wasn't exactly based on his story but only "inspired by". Guess that's what threw me there. And the Screen Story credit I knew should of been OMB as we always credit Story by with OMB...the word "Screen" threw me there as well.

Thanks for the help guys. Appreciate it.
