Hi!
I've tried to do a search of the forum but i got soooo many hits and nothing that were helpful so here is my question.
What do you do when a DVD has the same UPC/EAN as another DVD? I bought a DVD called Blood & Chocolate with UPC 7-332421-028374 which is already in the database for The Hitcher.

Try using disc id and if that's unique, you can submit it that way.

First thing you want to do is be sure it is an official release and not a bootleg. (Not that it is... but very possible) If it turns out to be a bootleg then it does not get contributed at all.

If it turns out to be official you will need to add it by Disc ID. Add DVD --> Add Inserted Disc --> Uncheck Download from Invelos (Bottom Left Side of Window).

by the looks of it:
7332421028374 is The Hitcher
the EAN belongs to: (GTIN search)
Nordisk Film AB
GLN: 7391717000005
Address:   Contact Details:
Box 27184   tel: +46858761000
102 52 Stockholm   fax: +46858761003
Sweden

you can do as LJG says, if the disc-id is already taken download by title "Blood & Chocolate" from another locality and change it to your details, lock it and don't contribute that title.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

Thanks everyone. I'll do the disc ID but it is very frustrating that there can be two DVDs with the same UPC.

If the locality is the same (Sweden, in this case), then your only chance is using the disc-id

I recently had this happen as well with Barcode (5031932000061) which is in the database as
Quote:
The Marseilles Connection
Production Year: 1973
DVD Release: [unknown]
UPC: 5-031932-000061
Locality: United Kingdom

The only problem is the film i have is "Nosferatu" (1922) i just contributed it with the disc ID and put in my contribution notes why i could not contribute with the UPC/EAN

There seems to be a lot of debate as to whether the 23rd Century DVDs are legit or not (the firm that released The Marseilles Connection).

They appear to be VHS transfers and some claim they've released uncut versions of films, that haven't been certificated as such by the BBFC.

Others point out they are public domain films or they hold copyright for short periods, e.g. only two years. In terms of distribution they only seem to be sold through ebay or £1 shops.

On the assumption they are legitimate I would suggest that titles with proper distribution should take precedence over limited distribution, but only Ken/Gerri can decide that one in preference to the original release rule.

So who decides what's a proper distribution?
I'm not really looking forward to the discussions that will occur.
"First in" should remain as long as it's a legit release.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I have to agree with, goblins. It's irrational to expect Ken and Gerri to have perfect knowledge and/or possession of 300,000 plus titles.

I agree... it should remain first into the database.

I never said I had any such expectation.

As far as I'm concerned if Ken & Gerri keep quiet on the subject it's clear what their intention is.

There are at least two legitimate (non-bootleg) DVD distributors in the USA making multiple DVD releases on the same day with identical UPCs, but different movies. We went back and forth on one I own a few years ago. Because the other title had been submitted first, that submission kept the UPC, my film (DVD) used the (different) disc ID. Since then, we've seen (in this forum) discussion of other such releases, from both that same company (I'm at work and cannot recall which company, but it was the "Lemon Grove Kids" DVD in my collection) and at least one other company which releases many DVDs on the same day with the same UPC. It's odd, but it happens, and not just from bootlegging/pirating businesses...
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I have similar recollections (dating back to the IVS era) of two Brazilian Continental Home Video releases sharing the same UPC. One was a Jacques Tati movie, the other one a western. I also have two German releases of different Buster Keaton movies sharing the same EAN.
