Supposedly, 3-D Blu-ray hits next year. Do we know anythign about the requirements to use it? My Westinghouse TV really isn't that great and I'd like to replace it with a SONY XBR8, but I don't want to buy a TV that won't be able to do 3-D at least through a shuttered method.

My understanding is that a new 3-D capable television will be required as well.

I was thinking an older TV with sufficient refresh rate could be used with the shutter glasses. (Though this, in effect, halves the brightness), but couldn't find a reference.

I also keep hearing that current TVs can't handle it.

I think Sony is working on a 3-D capable TV (and planning also to create 3-D gaming with the PS3 in the future), but probably others are as well. Expect it next year.

In the UK, Sky TV intend to broadcast some 3D material in 2010 - So, those of us that just purchased the "oooh shiny" True HD screens can now curse they are out of date.

Mind you, it is almost getting as bad as computers, where you buy a new computer, and it is out of date before you leave the store.

Oh well, guess that means that some films I will have to buy again, after I get a new screen
Signature? We don't need no stinking... hang on, this has been done... blast [oooh now in Widescreen]
Ah... well you see.... I thought I'd say something more interesting... but cannot think of anything..... oh well

I've not been following things too closely, but I don't believe that a standard has been approved yet.  So no one is making TVs yet that are 3D compatible.

I know 3D is all the rage right now, and I've seen a couple of 3D movies in the theatre and they've been alright. But are people really clamouring for 3D at home? Personally I couldn't care less, but maybe I'm the odd man out?

I sure am. I was blown away by Beowulf in 3D in the theater and want to be able to have a similar experience at home.

I'm in no hurry to replace my equipment for 3D.  It's a neat idea, but it doesn't really excite me at this point.

A standard? I'm sure there will be two or three of them.

First you should have a big screen, I mean beamer would be advice to get the immersion.
Secondly you need a 3D TV/beamer that was design for it, it's not a simple upgrade of actual device sorry. Basiclly the screen must be able to refresh at 120Hz.

Now there is only a couple of device compatible. Some 22" LCD display, one or 2 24", some DLP beamer and Mitsubishi retroprojector TV (that are DLP too in fact).

Here you have some exemple

The neat thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

But as a lot of time for this kind of new product, it's urgent to wait
