I downloaded the free version of the desktop program.  I scanned in my collection about 280 movies. I am thinking about buying the iOS version so I can browse my collection from my couch.  What do I gain by purchasing the desktop version/what do lose out on by having the free desktop version and the iOS app?

Thanks in advance.

So, just buying the IOS version will not allow me to view online or print a report of my 400+ DVDs ?? It kind of underhanded approach to make buy the $29.95 PC version...
I hope I am wrong and just missing something.

Well, in my opinion the problem is something else. I see the iOS version as primarily an extension to the PC version. I don't think Invelos created it in order to "trick" people into buying the PC version. But they should be clearer in the description of the iOS version, explaining that many advanced features can only be used in conjunction with the PC program.

Administrating your collection is so much easier in the PC program. But the iOS program is ideal for browsing from the couch, like the OP suggested. It's definitely the most used app on my iPad, that's for sure. I think both programs are worth their price many times over.

Appreciate the response. I just wish more options were open, at least on a temporary basis, on the free version to experience the full range of capabilities. Most things I try I get blocked.
For example, can I filter and/or sort by purchase retailer? Or by who I have loaned DVD's to?
I did notice the ability to create multiple collections, which does not seem possible on the IOS version; I did like that a lot. Also, how many items can be backed to the online service before maintenance fees kick in (if any)?

It has been quite a while since I've used the free version, but I believe it is fully functional up to 50 discs. You mention have 200+, so this functionality is probably disabled. If you want to play with the free version, I'd save/backup your current database, delete everything of the program other than that and then re-download. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but at that point, you should be able to use the trial again. Perhaps you might need a different login name? (You can always revert to your current name after). Then only add a handful of profiles.

My answers for your other questions are based on the desktop version. The main program does not filter or sort by purchase retailer that I could see. However, it does have a tag system where you can manually add the tag and then you can sort by tag. Also, there is a great plugin that you can download (free) and us that you can sort, filter, count by purchase place (also by a lot of other things). It's called Database Query.

For the online service-so far there are no fees, but it is pretty basic and needs a bit of a make-over. You can click on mine (or anyone else who has it enabled) by clicking on one of the buttons at the top right of my post-it's the movie reel. There has been some talk by the owner that he is working on a better online version, but it's been many months since anything has been announced. Basically, the owner, programer, everything else is one person and his wife. Everything is released slowly.

I'm not sure if you know this, but the desktop version of the program has been around for years. The iOS version only a couple. So main functionality is based on the desktop and is why the iOS is more basic, IMO.

Also, once you buy licenses for the desktop version (and the iOS version), you have an unlimited license-this includes any and all future releases. Darn good bargain for $29.95!

Thanks LJG. Went ahead and took the $29.95 plunge. Indeed powerful, a bit convoluted, but I'm getting used to.
One thing I have not figured out is how to add a copy of the same DVD. Somehow we have ended with two Sandlot, two Milo and Otis, and other. I keep one copy in my location, and the other with my granddaughter. I tried adding a second disc, but the separate locations for each did not seem to function correctly - it kept only the latest.

You could change the först ones UPC to Manual and the add it again. The manual one will not get updates becourse it will be a local copy. But it the only way to have more then one.

Or you could use tags to tell that you have two.

Or even write text in the notesection.

Awesome! I don't think you'll regret it, I haven't!

You can do the options Knasen69 mentions but you can also adjust the "count as" number in the personal information section when you edit the profile. If I remember correctly, this is deliberate as Ken (the owner) does not want the software used as rental software.
