I have just made a contribution putting an uncredited actor into a profile IMDb is one of the sources i have quoted to show that the actor was in that film i have done this before with no problem but does this new ruling mean that any mention of IMDb even when other sources are given will get a automatic decline?

There is a difference between mass copy of a credit list from a third party and verifying a point of data among multiple sites.  Promoting or allowing a mass copy of a third party's data (if it violates their usage license) would be unethical on our part.  We do not, and this is not a new rule.

Apparently so. Ken's latest addition to the Contribution Rules for cases in which there are no associated role names says: "However, third party commercial databases must not be used."

Check this thread for further details.

Too much is being read into this - it is intended as a clarification, not a new policy.  I've modified it to read:
"However, mass copy from a third party commercial databases which violates their stated usage license is not allowed."

Quoting Ken from that thread...

Quote:
The rules as written do not allow this submission.  From the submitted notes for this contribution: "IMDB was used only for those episodes I haven't watched yet".  The rules specifically state that the cast list must come from the DVD credits directly.  It allows the roles from another source, but not the cast list.  Therefore, the decline was per rules and stands.

The role issue is not related to this contribution decline, however it does require clarification.  I have added a specific clarification that should prevent confusion.

Bold by me... that was just a clarification to what was already meant... not an addition to the rules. It is the actual intent of the rule that was already there.

That's actually a significant difference.

Using a third party database to identify missing role names does not constitute "mass copying" in my mind.

If you are in doubt whether the use of the data would violate the source's license, do not submit it.  That's the bottom line.

May I suggest deleting the word "a" in front of "third party"?

The latest rule version reads as follows:

If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use the film itself, or another source to identify the role. However, mass copy from a third party commercial database which violates their stated usage license is not allowed. In each case, list Actor’s names and roles (when given) exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited.

Suggestion: give the sentence "In each case ... same order credited."  a bullit of its own. It seems to refer not just to cases where there are no associated roles, but also to other cases with non-standard credits.

I agree with ken, FAR too much is being read into this sentence and its intent. It makes prefect sense to me.

I agree. The list of unacceptable third party databases has already branded IMDb under the banner: "These are not to be used for DVD Profiler online contributions". That's not what Ken's clarification of mass copying states. This is being taken too far.

I agree with Skip and James here. The rule haven't change at all (you need at least 2 sources for the role and not 2 that are exact copy). Don't make something complicated of Ken statement the result will only be that some users will stop to submit tv series profile in the database and those profiles are the hardest to do.

As far as I'm concerned, Ken's latest statement is perfectly clear. So all's well in DVDP land...

The 3rd party database blacklist thread was started 2 hours after Ken's post, so it's not perfectly clear and all is not well, I'm sorry to say.
