Does anyone know anything about surfeur?

He last logged in on Jan., 1st, which is quite unusual, since even during his "vacations" he logged in
several times a day.

I hope he's well.

I believe he finally had enough when he was told that THIS THREAD was seen as a political one.

In his last post he said...

This is pathetic. I wish to see the life of an innocent human being saved, and people here discuss about it is political or not.

Shame. Although I disagreed with Yves on several subjects I found him helpful and generally a sound (and passionate!) character.

Now that you mention it, it's been a while since I've seen Yves. I hope he's doing well and he'll be back eventually. Regardless of the views one has on how the site, online and software needs to evolve, any active and contributing member that leaves is a loss

That is absolutely atrocious behavior by the people in that thread and I applaud Yves for having the courage to speak out, and have the conviction to leave something he enjoyed doing.

This community truly has some of the most disagreeable people I have ever seen on the net.

When I read that thread I didn't see anything I would call "atrocious behavior". And no matter the intention of the thread... it is IMO a political one which is already known is not allowed on these boards.

I agree with Pete. The thread should have been locked right after it was posted.

Yeah who cares about injustice and human suffering. FAQ and rule thumping is more important.

Way to go!

There are many many many important issues in the world that should be noted somehow. This forum is about DVDs, Blu-rays and movies, not for politics. It just isn't more difficult than that. There is a time and a place for everything.

Who says I don't care about injustice and human suffering. IMHO, this is just not the place for it. I just call it the way I see it. I don't see going to someone else's site and breaking their rules. If I want to discuss things that breaks the rules here... it is very simple to do... go to a site that allows it.

I didn't make the rules... and at the same time I ain't arrogant enough to think the rules don't apply to me. If I break the rules I fully expect the post to be deleted or thread locked... and fully expect to get some sort of warning, if not a banning. That is just the way it is.

In the same way I would consider my DVD Reviews on the "Amnesty International" site to be inappropriate.

There are sites that exist solely to brandish "injustice and human suffering", but this is not one of them.
If you want to discuss the situation of human rights in Liberia, Mexico, Syria, etc I'd recommend this site: Human Rights Watch
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I'd be more upset that the Academy Awards (i.e. movies.. dvd's etc)  were taken over and won by the French the other night ...

Well, to be fair, it was posted in the General Discussion forum where by definition "Discuss anything and everything, within the bounds of the forum guidelines."

The argument can be made (and was) that it was political, but that's really debatable. Either way, it is amusing that people can't be trusted to discuss politics here.

Grendel is spot on though, FAQ and rule thumping trumps EVERYTHING in this forum, regardless of the topic.

Politics is like art... difficult to define but most of us recognize it when we see it.

"Discuss anything and everything, within the bounds of the forum guidelines." ... and the forum guidelines specifically forbid political discussions. If one crank calls a statement political, we might be reasonable to dismiss the crank. But when a number of people (whose posts we have read over the years and we find reasonable) describe a post or thread as political, there might be merit in their opinion. I am a strong believer in minority rights, but even if the idea that the thread was political is debatable, to storm off because it was being debated is (perhaps) the reason that even the General Forum here has a rule forbidding political discussions.

I like good discussions, reasonable aguments, heated debates, etc., but internet forums seem to develop internet tough guys whose every word seems like a challenge... demanding that we unleash the worst in ourselves. We call them trolls. Political discussions in unmoderated forums often bring out the troll in all of us. I decided to block the very few people here who unleash my troll each time they post. I don't need to be angry when I want to read and discuss DVDs, Blu-rays, TV, film and life with others who also share some of my same loves. And if we need to self moderate ourselves by avoiding political discussions here, I'm okay with this.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Cliff
