The rules define "DVD-ROM Content" as:

Quote:
Content available only via DVD-ROM. (Check this box in addition to any other check-boxes for that content – do not list specifics in Other).

That's all well and good, but what happens when the disc isn't a DVD, but a Blu-ray? Does the same principle apply? Do we still tick it for content available only via BD-ROM? I did that, earlier today, but promply ran into a "no"-vote from someone who felt that because this is a Blu-ray, "DVD-ROM Content" cannot be used. But apart from what kind of disc it's on, it's the exact same thing: a piece of data that can only be seen/read/accessed on a computer with a drive capable of reading that particular disc...

So: do we use "DVD-ROM Content" for "Blu-ray Content" as well, or not?

Of Course we do.

DVDProfiler still hasn't fully arrived in the BluRay-age.
You will find lots of entries that only refer to DVD even though all allowed disc-types are meant.

As best example just take a look at the menu to add discs to your collection. It's named "Add DVD by EAN/UPC...". Does that mean that you cannot download BluRay-profiles?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Ken should search and replace each and every mentioning of the therm DVD in the rules with a broader definition... Many rules refer to DVDs, so your voter couldn't use the TV-Series rules for Blu Rays and so on...

PS: It should be called "Content only accessible via PC" and all (modern) media would be covered, as long someone wouldn't include webcodes etc. into this category.

Just curious, but is there a specific title or special feature you're referring to? I've never seen DVD-Rom type extras on a Blu-ray before.

Yes, this came up when profiling the U.K. Blu-ray profile for 'Moneyball'.

Rules are very clear. It is DVD-ROM content, not Blu-ray-ROM. As for other part of rules, they have to be followed blindly, not interpreted. A rule change may be discussed in proper forum.

Use of the program is not dictated by rules. You can do what you want locally. But contributions must be done per the rules, without interpretation.

Agreed! Or "Add DVD by Disc ID" etc....

I own quite a few Blu-rays that have "ROM" content"

4 Harry Potter Blu-rays.
3 Lord of the Rings Blu-rays
Several Shout! Factory Blu-rays, etc...

They all have "DVD-ROM" ticked in the Features in the database, and nobody's ever had an issue with it.

This!

I agree. Per Ken in the Men in Black thread regarding these types of issues:

"One-off rulings on individual titles are a waste of time - there is always a new twist available to cast a slightly different shade of gray, and users cannot be expected to scour the forums on a title-by-title basis.  Similarly, refining and complicating the rules to satisfactorily contain each of these new variants is an exercise in futility.

Local databases can support an infinite variety of variants for title and other fields, and the local locks are available to make those changes permanent.  With this in mind, hopefully the supporters on both sides of this and other similar debates can agree that the direction of a decision here is less important that the fact of a decision.  Consistency for submission to the online is possible and what we should shoot for.  Agreement on how it "should be" is neither possible nor (thankfully) necessary.

We'll be implementing a global edit for contribution evaluator use.  This will allow us to make a decision on a particular range of titles and standardize them directly.  In this particular case, the titles will be Men in Black, Men in Black II and Men in Black III.  Details on the forthcoming implementation will be posted before we begin making any profile changes."

However how many of them actually have ROM content.  Like CC these could just be leftovers from forgetting to untick them after cloning from the DVD.  I am sure some actually have ROM content just like some BD's actually have CC.  But I am sure there are some out there from cloning where the person forgot to untck the box.

Not sure about rhe Shout Factory ones, but the Harry Potter and LOTR ones might be for the content on the DVD copies in those sets, at least in my collection.

Perhaps some, but many definitely have "ROM" content like the Shout Factory Blu-rays, which have PDF screenplays, etc..

I was only meaning that we should watch for those because "some" could be wrong.  Just like some BD's have CC some actually have ROM content.  But it is not common.

The Moneyball profile came up again, with a link to this thread. I'm pretty sure I was the no-voter that triggered this thread in the first place, and I can appreciate, accept, understand and adhere to the general consensus of having all *-ROM material usable on any computer or device with a *-ROM available, regardless of whether * is DVD, BD or even HDDVD... That makes sense, although it serves as another example of places where DVD Profiler could still use a bit of modernization.

However, in the case of Moneyball, I'm still no-voting it. The feature in question is one currently listed under Other Features as "PS3 Wallpaper/Theme". In other words; this feature is ONLY available on PS3 units, not any computer or device with a BD-ROM, and hence I still feel it's wrong to place it in this feature.

Thoughts?
