I thought that if we non-noobs gave fair/honest answers to noob questions, they might like the atmosphere enough to pop for owning the program and perhaps contributing to the database maintenance. Or we could treat them poorly and they'll go away without putting up their $30 or add anything to the db...

Blah, blah, blah, blah....where's the fun in that?

I vote for "Kens got it just right", I heard about DVD profiler, downloaded it, tried it and liked it, stumped up the money.

Forum search feature sucks, FAQs suck, but a great product. Once my access violation is fixed I'll be really happy.

In general, my experience with newbies is that the older ones are more respectful and less likely to go ballistic if somebody gives a short answer.  Its usually the young ones who are impatient, imprudent, and arrogant who expect you to do everything for them 'just because.'

Kinda like 2nd Lieutenants in a combat zone - they don't usually last too long.

In this world people want everything for nothing. I used to have my collection in MSACCESS and it wasn't what I was truly happy with. Then I lost my MS Access disk and didn't want to hassle with coming up with something new. I stumbled upon this program from the Microsoft site. I quickly went over the 50 DVD limit and by that time it was too late to turn back, I had found exactly what I was looking for. The 30 bucks is nothing and is cheap money for such a great program. I think they should stay with the 50 DVD limit and have a special forum for free users with read only access to the other forums. I think once people see what you can accomplish with this program and how great it is they will pony up the money and purchase. I recommended the program to a couple of my friends that are fellow collectors. I especially love the online feature from any internet computer.  THIS IS A GREAT PROGRAM. I greatly thank those responsible for this program and extensive database. It has solved and great problem for me and at the same time saved me a lot of time.

Got it. But 1st answers (before the noob gets "impatient, imprudent, and arrogant") ought to be helpful, even if the noob failed to look very deeply for the same question & answer given many times before.

Not every noob has been to many forums before coming here...

Many 2nd looies survived their 1st run into a combat zone by paying attention to the wisdom of their sergeants. They became the 1st lieutenants, and some lived to be captains...
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

if you read the forums - you'll notice 90% + are all paid users anyhow... just leave the access to the users, its how they learn... restrict the program to gain revenue

I think Ken has it right on now.  Low priced software needs to have a trial basis, whether it is loaded with a "time bomb" that stops working after a while or limits access.  The forums (while most people who use them are paying customers) show those who have not yet provided their investment in development (paid, in other words) that if they do have a problem, their problem can be easily answered by the many people here with so much experience.

I think Ken is going way above and beyond offering any type of online storage space for those who do not purchase the product.  If it were me, I think I would lock down the program a little more until it is paid for, but kudos to Ken for having more faith in humans than I do.

Simple answer. If you don't like it then don't use it. Or is it you are willing to use it if it's free.

actually skip  i wouldnt use the new version at all.  after a couple minutes of using the new version  i just dont like so free or pay doesnt really matter to me.  actually the only reason i used the old version becasue i hated keeping an access database of my dvds and the old version saved me all the typing.  however i think im going back to using a access database as its a lot less bloated

Sorry, did I just hear "Access" and "less bloated" in the same sentence?

sofa: Admittedly, between the software developer and a newbie user there is a huge gap. A "couple of minutes" simply doesn't do DVD Profiler justice, try an hour or two...

That's a hoot, isn't it?  If he really, truly wants lean and mean, he should just go back to dBase II.  Of course, he wouldn't be able to use any pictures with his data, but what the hell, right?
