I'm an Espon man myself. Used HP for a while but they always had problems. I'm currently using the Epson Perfection Series and am pleased with the results.

Same here: I own an Epson Perfection 1240U (yes - not the latest model *lol*) and a new HP combi printer and scanner. To be honest -  I only use the Epson for scans and I'm quite content with the results!

Do they make new scanners with a USB connection or would I still need to get an A/B switch?

gonna have to go with Canon...the scans I have made for my Parents with their HP all look like crap compared to the ones I make with my CanoScan LiDE 50. Banding problems galore.

I too have a CanoScan LiDE 50, and I'm quite pleased with it and the software than came with it.

I suppose, he means a switch to change amongst 2 different serial devices?

You have to go back a few years, but scanners used to use parallel. A/B switches were common then to enable you to switch between your printer and scanner.

There were a few [pricey] HP scanners at least that had both ports, but you'll be lucky to find any parallel scanner now.

I don't know if this applies to Kathy, but beware if your PC is more than a few years old. Some drivers for printers and scanners will have a minimum processor requirement.

EDIT: Here's one of the clunky beasts!

My computer (my first!) is a little more than a year old. The language and terminology everyone uses  is foreign to me but I'm trying! Although I love the sarcasm and teasing, (blah, blah, blah... ) I must admit I also like when things are also explained! I want to get a scanner because I have some movies that are not in the data base and I want to contribute as well as taking advantage of everyone else's expertise ... be afraid - very afraid! Thanks to all for their help - at least I have a place to start on my scanner search!

To which the sensible(ish) answer is that you'll find it hard to find a scanner that doesn't use a USB connection... if you hadn't gathered

I saw your sarcasm, but you rather were the Gordon Brown of the forum and left the question unanswered!
