Is HD so good that it makes SD look that much worse? |

| Posted: | | | | It's hard to go back to SD after watching HD, esp. for sports. Watch a hockey game in HD and then try to do one in standard. It hurts!
That being said, I hate MTV, VH1 and a few other channels that say they are HD, but never really are. Some are squished into the frame, others just braodcast in windowbox. What's the freakin' point of having VH1 HD when every new show that is obvilously shot in HD, isn't shown in HD? And why only the shows I care about from these networks, then my girl gets to watch all her shiitake mushroom in real HD? happy funtime Comcast!
Oh yeah, Fox. I'm still waiting for True Lies and Ravenous to have watchable releases. It's hard to even try watching those dvds on the small SD screen now that I've seen HD. |

Quote: When watching TV, true HD material (as opposed to upscaled broadcasts) is a lot better than SD (e.g. History HD vs. SD History). I'll grant you that HDTV looks a lot better than SDTV, but my local cable company compresses its signal so much that most of what it calls "HD" struggles to rise above the quality of a good SD DVD, and nothing that they broadcast can touch a decent Blu-ray.
--------------- Fortunately my cable company offers good quality HD, so the difference is vast - provided you're watching true HD content. Then again, the national broadcasters here have all gone HD, but mostly offer upscaled SD content. And what's more, their sound quality is crap: they downmix DD 5.1 to stereo and then convert that into 5.1 again. The result is appalling. If, for instance, you watch a football match on a Dutch channel and then switch to a German channel to watch the same match, the Germans will give you a true stadium experience, soundwise, whereas the Dutch... don't even go there | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

Importing is your friend. Make a stand with your wallet squire, and buy from another company. (although Ravenous is released by Foz in UK, it's anamorphic). |

The Abyss is coming on Blu-ray ... [Removed reference to James Cameron's HD work on Ghosts of the Abyss at www.mvfinc.com] Wrong Abyss, sorry But The Abyss and True Lies both just might be on their way to Blu-ray during 2013. According to www.digitalbits.com news item on 3/13/2012. So possibly, maybe... | | | Last edited: by Ranavalone |

| Posted: | | | | I voted for HD is great, but SD is fine too. A PS3, with all the current updates, upscales SD quite well. I can even tolerate, dare I say it, non-anamorphic. Yes, there is an extreme spread, but it's watchable. | | | Marty - Registered July 10, 2004, User since 2002. |

(although Ravenous is released by Foz in UK, it's anamorphic). I used to import discs all the time, but lately have been lazy about it. Part is prices and exchange rates got to far wrong for me, so for many things it's not worth the bother or is too expensive to justify. The second is my region free player is acting like it's gonna die, and only gets through stuff from other regions now without crapping out and freezing. The thrid is my region free player doesn't up-convert, and I can really tell a drastic difference between an upconverted dvd and a not, I'm freaking spoiled! I watched Witchboard the other night (I have the R2 dvd with DTS, which my either RF player or new stereo couldn't handle, so I was stuck with 5.1 or silence anyway) and it looked like complete shiitake mushroom. Stutteringly bad transfer with an amazingly horrid output. I'd toss that in the trash in a second for a BD, and might just trash it for the r1 dvd now that I can't play the freaking DTS track anyway. I played with the settings of my stereo and player and got nothing but silence, which sucks even more as it used to work on my old set-up, so I know it's not a disc error. Any word on cheap region free BD players yet? |

| Posted: | | | | What do you call cheap? Something like this? Since you're in Michigan, it might be worthwhile to pop across the Canadian border to get it really cheap at a Canadian WallMart store (read the first customer review on Amazon). More alternatives here. BTW: today's exchange rate for the euro against the dollar was at its lowest since two years, so perhaps European buys are becoming more feasible for you again. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

| Posted: | | | | As with any new technology it takes time for everybody to get on board. I remember the first stereos recordings, they went wild with the ping-pong effect. With digital music they found they had to change their method of recording and some recording locations just didn't work.
The Motorola engineer that designed the digital circuity for the McIntosh didn't think it sounded as good as the tube version, but in a bind test even he couldn't tell the difference.
This reminds me when the first color TV came out. When our neighbors invited us to watch their new color set, there was only one station and only a couple of shows in color It was horrible, but we didn't tell then that. The tube if I remember correctly the tube was round.
The same can be said of some attempts at transfer at transferring some films to HD.
I voted with the majority. Because to me it depends on the original source and how the transfer is done
I have double dipped on some of my favorite films to HD, but only after I've studied the reviews. The same is true of older films that is my first buy, I wait for and study the reviews. Plus there always the extras to consider. A number of HDs have pretty interesting extra features, West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz.
I have bought some TV shows in HD where the earlier shows were not in HD, but I doubt if I'll replace the older series if the are reissued in HD.
Sports played outdoors are especially great in HD. I remember when TV resolution got good enough that you could actually see that the pitcher's mound was actually raised.
The bottom line is simply, if you want to realize the full HD experience you got to have the right media and equipment.
If in doubt go to a high-end hi-if store where they have private listening and watching rooms and check it out. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own. BTW: today's exchange rate for the euro against the dollar was at its lowest since two years, so perhaps European buys are becoming more feasible for you again. That player is pretty much what I've been waiting for, last time I looked everything was $300+, with reliable models starting ove $400. I'll have to check a few reviews but the price is right. Didn't realize the euro was that down, but all the sites I ordered from are British Pounds anyway, which was always higher. Just checked and pounds have came back a bit, last time I looked they were 2:1, now it's slightly over 1.5:1. The world may be opening back up. Can't go shop Canada though, even though it is a short drive from where I am. I was stopped at the border and had something with me I shouldn't and thought I didn't. Bottom line, I was read the trespass act and told I would be arrested if I crossed again, unless I gave them a boatload of money to look at my case (no gurantee I'd be let back in, but they did say probably). Then I was called a menace to society and sent back to the States, didn't even refund my bridge fee. Since then Canada has been dead to me. Oh yeah, all I had was a mostly empty baggie with a couple seeds and stems I thought I had thrown out before picking up my date. Them finding this after random stopping us caused my car to be almost disasembled and me nearly strip-searched. A few parts of that car never did go back together right. Last edit: After reading that first review and seeing the price, I'll see if I can send a friend over to Canada for me! Or, I could almost pay my re-entry fee on the price difference. | | | Last edited: by bigdaddyhorse |
