Maybe it's just me, but I can't make the cast rule make any sense.  If we are still required to list the cast as credited, which is what the rule says, what on earth is the 'as credited' box supposed to be for?

The credit system was not implemented lightly.  I considered many different approaches and finally settled on this.  We will no doubt have some contention on particular actors, but the Credited As will at least allow everyone to have their credit list exactly as the film credits list, while still maintaining complete accurate linking.

As with all else, this will be re-evaluated over time and with user input, but let's give this a go as-is for a while.

Ken, so I would I proceed when editing a cast list...?

If I filter the actor list for "Courtney Cox" I will see "Courtney Cox" and Courtney Cox-Arquette". Would I have to be consistent within my own database and always choose the same entry to get the linking to work, or will choosing any one of the listed entries and then just adding the "credited as" as needed allow the linking anyway...?

You'll need to choose the same actor entry, then use Credited As to allow the listing to show as credited.

As a side note, the database repair utility now optionally removes unused cast, crew, retailers and studios to help you keep your local db clean.

@everyone:
This is a new site from a new conpany. Everyone should be starting fresh and at the same level. Many will see this as a positive, some no doubt will not. In just 1 day I have seen a few people poke their heads in that haven't voiced their presence at IVS in quite some time. It would be great to see some of those and others join the community again.

Totally agree. I've enjoyed seeing the new old faces.

I am very, very happy with the "credited as" feature: this is how I always hoped it would turn out, although many users have always assured me that it would never happen this way...

Online name linking has arrived!

Has it? Maybe I'm wrong, but it occurred to me that the software possibly uses ONLY the "credited as" names for the online database? So that when you upload a profile, only the "credited as" names are uploaded, and the "common names" you use in your local database stays just that: local? Mind you: I wouldn't have any problem with that approach!

I'm happy as well, and I'm probably wrong about how it all works.

I think it's great and I'm ready to give it a go.

Thanks again: finally a proper solution to the whole "as credited" vs. linking debacle. This is exactly the solution I've always hoped for in this department. I love all the other features too, but this really makes my day!

Ken,

This might have been addressed already, but...if I contribute something with Courteney Cox-Arquette in it, and she's credited as Courteney Cox...when another user downloads that profile, and double-clicks her name...will they also see Courteney Cox-Arquette at the top?

Basically, do the "Master Names" upload with contributions?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
Rapture."

I agree, can you tell us what happens with the names between the local database and the online database? Is the local system smart enough to know that Helena/Bonham/Carter = Helena//Bonham Carter for example?  If not, could it be?

Two questions.

Do the "master" name and the "credited as" name both get uploaded to the main database?

Who will be the arbiter of what the "master name" should be?

My point precisely, hal. That is why I asked the question. I think perhaps the concept should be reversed, Master Name=AS CREDITED, and As Credited should be AKA.

Perhaps we could have a sticky thread with an agreed (i.e. by the forum members...by voting?) list, just like we had for the studios in the old forums.

Probably not the best answer, as has been pointed out to me numerous times not all users will frequent the forums, let alone drop by on any regular basis to see if there have been changes. I think reversing the idea is probably the best answer. That effectively ends the problems caused by users arguing over how they think a name should be listed.

Oooo... our 1st debate

IMO reversing what the programmer wants may work, it may be better (not sure) but it's not what he  wants, it's what we had before, with a variation

I am willing to follow his request and take his word for it that it was "not implemented lightly". We do need a clarification on a couple of the questions asked above but as Ken said, "let's give it a go as-is for a while" (It is his program after all  )

As you said Rick, we need Ken to clarify a couple of points, dismissing the potential out of hand is NOT the right answer. We have too many users perfectly willing to turn the database into an unmanageable electronic pretzel.

I am always willing to follow Ken's direction, I could be wrong but I don't believe he wants the program to go down this particular road. So Ken help us out here.
