I need a little advice on this issue.  Maybe some of you more experienced user/contributors can help me out here.  I track pre-release DVDs that I want to purchase in my wishlist as much as 6 months in advance of the release.  How much information (or how little) is appropriate for those DVD movies that haven't been made available for inspection/audit personally?
Myself, I generally like to have as much information on the movie as possible in my profiles so that I can answer questions I receive from friends and family on upcoming releases.  However, I note that the amount of data provided in these profiles in the online DB vary widely.  I have read and re-read the contribution notes and they do not cover this topic to any great degree.

Also, when I contribute a new profile to the DB I don't get the opportunity to select which items in my  local profile I wish to contribute.  It is an all or nothing operation.  Maybe the answer is to have the ability to select only those items in the profile that should be submitted for pre-release items and still be able to have all of the preliminary info in the local profile.  I guess another approach would be to only initially enter the correct information in the profile for the online DB, then update the local profile to add any additional information wanted in the local profile after contributing the initial profile to the online DB.  Again, here is where I need a little input.  What is the appropriate information that should be entered in the profile for initial contribution prior to the DVD release?

I do not want to start a war on this, but I would appreciate a little guidance here.

i do the same in many cases... the following is what (in my opinion) you should have:

  • title

  • dvd release date

  • production year

  • full correct UPC code (i would start here, use the "pending" option while searching)

  • SRP (which can be found at the above link)

  • at least one studio

  • basic overview (can be written by you)

  • if title is a re-release i would take the cast/crew from previous version

  • and if available cover art (full box shot, or front only)

    JoN's list is perfectly logical.

the only way around how much local database info to contribute for a new profile is to only have that information you want uploaded in the profile. if you've filled out the profile beyond that, make a backup, delete what you don't want to contribute, contribute the profile, then restore the original profile from the backup. tediuos. you betcha, but i don't know of any other way to do it.

All I ask that people please add the corrected SRP when they add pre-release titles.  I keep finding profiles with the price that the users paid for the title on-line, rather than the actual SRP.  $13.17 is not an SRP!

Yeah, that annoys me too.  I've got a DVD in my wishlist that's available only direct from the makers, SRP listed by them as € 39.00 (currently being discounted by them to € 35.00) but in DVDP listed as SRP € 14.99!  If putting in SRP, please only enter it if you know what you're doing as it is one thing people are highly reluctant to change.

If you possess common sense (as seems to be the case), use your judgement in prereleases I say.

actually, you can select which parts of the profile you wish to contribute, so please leave out any that do not meet the contribution rules.
