| | Posted: | | | | Anyone notice that all of the database entries for Star Wars Return of The Jedi are for the sticker UPC code and not the actual UPC code under the sticker? I bought mine from Best Buy without the sticker and when I entered it in, nothing was found...stickers also tend to ruin DVDs so lets get rid of them and use what the actual upc is and make it consistent throughout the database...several other dvds in the database also have this stupid UPC sticker problem | | | | Last edited: by kewlcastud |

| | Posted: | | | | Actually it is how you do things here...I have at least 20 other dvds that I had to peel the UPC sticker off of from the store to get the underneath UPC code to database it as it was not registering the sticker UPC. Just like others have the sticker UPC (like the Star Wars DVD) and it's registered in the Database. Some you need the UPC code under the sticker, some you use the sticker UPC. There is no rule on this yet. |

The sticker is put on by the distributor, if the stick is different from the underlyng UPC then the sticker wins. We don't work for the distributor and we don't know why they do that, they have their reason. Like I said it is not how we do things here.

| | Posted: | | | | They can both be submitted. If you've found some that are missing then submit them. Personally I always use the underlying sticker when adding something to my db. It usually gives me the better profile and is also the one that gets updated more (if necessary).  |

For all we know it could be an internal shop barcode used for inventory.
At least with the cover upc, you know it's the code that everyone else will have. |

I'm not disagreeing with the reason why they are put on there, I am disagreeing with your statement that the sticker UPC is UNIVERSALLY used in the database...it is not. THERE IS NO RULE FOR THIS. While entering almost 2000 dvds into the program there were several stickers (that were put on the DVD by the distributor) that were not registering but when I peeled the stickers off, the underlying UPC was found in the database. I have no problem going with what was on the sticker....but it needs to be consistent throughout the database and that was the point I was trying to make with this. If there is a rule made to use the sticker, then people can resubmit the sticker UPC as the official UPC. But as it stands now, there are numerous database entries based on the UPC code UNDER the sticker and not the UPC code on the sticker. Like Rick mentions below, people are free to resubmit them and have them voted on but first we need an official rule on the matter. Nothing personal but unless there is a specific rule to address this, your statement that "it is not how we do things here" I just don't agree with.

If the sticker is on the shrink wrap, it goes away as soon as you discard the shrink wrap. But if it's on the DVD cover (under the sleeve for keepers, or on the cover itself for snappers) that's a whole other story. Best Buy constantly gets on disc features that other stores don't get and sometimes the studios are too cheap to print different slip covers/covers for something that only has a limited run. If you use the UPC under the sticker then later try to add that feature to the printed UPC profile you would be in the wrong. |

| | Posted: | | | | Sometimes the sticker is wrong. I bought the 3 season ST:TOS "mega set" from Deep Discount DVD. Seasons 2 and 3 were the regular without bonus disc versions. Season 1 had the (Best Buy) bonus disc, and said so on the S1 cardboard case. The UPC printed on the S1 case was for the "with bonus disc" version, but a sticker with the "without bonus disc" UPC was placed on the shrink wrap over the printed UPC. So the oversticker would give a wrong entry for the database in this case.
