I never got into LD because of a combination of price and flippers.  What an odious notion.

The point is, it doesn't really matter what the studios want or do.

Doh, if the studios choose one over the other, it is clear that the public will have to follow by simple lack of an alternative!

Why talk about hypotheticals that are not about to happen?

Laserdisc and DIVX were formats supported by the studios that the public rejected.

They (and you) may think they (the studios) are in the driver's seat, but they'd (you'd) be mistaken.

I loved LD and bought many many titles, which I still have
I think "the public" would have easily adopted LD if the selection of titles continued to increase and the price continued to drop.

Yeah, I bought LD back in the day myself.  Loved getting Disney cartoons on LD (like Chip 'n Dale, Donald Duck), the image quality for that stuff was fabulous, even for SD.
Gotta nip it in the bud, Andy!

As a long time HD DVD user, I have several problems with Blu-Ray.  Yes it has a extra 20 gig's of space.  Has that done ANYTHING for the format at all?  NO.  HD DVD had the better looking HD Movies for quite a while until Blu-Ray finally got into the game.  Now Picture Quality is the same with both formats.  Audio is also just as good on Both formats.

On the other hand Movies Released on both formats, many have extra content on the HD DVD version.  Why is this and with less disc space?  Because Blu-Ray has a huge format Compatibility problem with the current Profile 1.0 (BETA) players.  The Deadline to not release a new 1.0 player past the Oct 31st deadline, and yet one did, and they cheated and called it 1.1 Ready.  Yet there's still not a single 1.1 Profile or 2.0 profile Blu-Ray player released YET.  Also only the Profile 2.0 players will have the SAME features and capabilities that ALL HD DVD players have supported since day 1.

Blu-Ray was rushed out into the Marketplace.  The PS3 was already 6 months late to release because of Blu-Ray and still at this time it's a unfinished format!!!  Right now, all Blu-Ray is, is a better looking DVD.  WOW, that's it.  On the other Hand HD DVD Has Dual PIP Video, Built in Ethernet connection, Much better Interactive Menu's, Data Storage Memory.

All these Released Blu-Ray players aren't even Upgradeable.  You can't add features when the Hardware to do it isn't even there.  The 1 1.1 Ready player, I would guess so.  The PS3, I would also guess so, but until it's been done, I won't guarantee it.

For those that have Blu-Ray, are you using a Optical Connection for your Surround sound?  Because if you are, it's not Surround Sound!!!  Optical is a Open format, Not Copy Protected, Blu-Ray will ONLY stream 2 Channel Stereo though a Optical connection.  Depending on how good your Receiver is at Simulating Surround sound is the results you have.  You HAVE to use a HDMI connection into your Surround sound Receiver to get True Surround sound!!!  You don't hear this talked much about.  Many people more then likely don't even realized this FACT!

The Double/Triple Copy protection Blu-Ray has, which I though we were finally getting away from that garbage with Music, but want more of it on are movies?  The Region Coding Blu-Ray has that HD DVD doesn't.  How About buying a Blu-Ray Exclusive of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Not released yet on Blu-Ray, but you can buy it NOW on HD DVD!!!  Take a look.

The whole Blu-Ray Profile garbage.
http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/sony-blu-ray-specification-deadline

Sony has their brainwashed fanboys so screwed up with the whole 1080i Vs 1080P.  So when they see people taking about the cheap Toshiba player and how it's only 1080i like it's a Negative, when it's pretty meaningless at it's still 1080P on your 1080P HDTV anyway.  Read here.

How about you buy a new Sony Blu-Ray player and the new Pirates Movie.  What do you get to look forward to?  Who would put up with this garbage?
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/movies/problems-with-blu+rays-bd+j-spec-causes-headaches-for-early-adopters-266923.php

With all this.  The BS Restrictions with Blu-Ray Recordable Discs, etc.  Why would anyone LIKE this Unfinished format???  Check out some of the other Blu-Ray stuff that isn't advertised!!!
http://www.campaignhd.com/

I also like this Video about HD DVD and Blu-Ray.  This sums it up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GhSsV55ZZ4&mode=related&search=

Do you also know that currently at this time Warner's Membership for Blu-Ray is currently expired!  Is that a ops, or a sign of going HD DVD exclusive soon???  The format war needs to end SOON or it'll end up like SACD and DVD Audio, both loosing and low quality MP3's winning out.

On a final note.  The Blu-Ray Release of Terminator 3 that's been on HD DVD forever.  To get around Blu-Rays Java problems, they are cheating and putting 2 copy's of the same Movie on the Blu-Ray Disc.  A Normal version, and a Version with a Simulated Picture in Picture Video Commentary.  How sad.  I just can't see why ANYONE other then fanboys like Blu-Ray?  Are they getting paid by Sony?

Even if Blu-Ray fails for Movies, which I hope it does for the better of everyone, it'll still be around for the PS3, no effect at all for PS3 games, it may still be used for PC's, for Data Storage.  Your never going to see 100 or 200 gig Blu-Ray Movie Discs.  You would have even a bigger Compatibility problems then there already is.

How would you like it, if you Paid for a new DVD today, and popped it into your 1 year old DVD player and the DVD didn't play, or you could only watch the Main movie, but all the extra content on the disc you couldn't access without buying a new DVD player?  That's Blu-Ray!!  Hell read a Blu-Ray player Manual!!!  Only DVD players are pretty cheap.  Blu-Ray players cost Hundreds!  Really, if you just HAVE TO HAVE BLU-RAY, WAIT until you can buy a 1.1 or 2.0 Profile player or otherwise budget in a cost of a new player a few months, to a year from now.

Yes, good come back.  When you don't have anything to back you up, you try to ignore it all.  Blu-Ray is a Unfinished rushed to marketplace format with lots of DRM!  That's a FACT!!!

This is like the Good Spock, Bad Spock episode in Star Trek. I think Ascended_Fanboy has been split in 2 and JBD is his goatee-wearing HD DVD-supporting evil twin.

Excellent Analogy...except I think they are both evil...no good Spock here.

HD DVD was faster to market because it is actually DVD+ (contrary to JBDragon's description comparing the two formats). Therefore it was easier and faster to implement and get to market. Blu-Ray was something new altogether and has the greater long-term potential of the two formats, but it wasn't ready to go at the time its competitor launched its products.

Let's remember, while extras and bells and whistles are nice to have (and both formats will have them equally someday, even if implemented differently), the most important part of HD is the picture and sound, and in capacity and A/V bandwidth, the delivery mechanism for both, HD DVD doesn't hold a candle to Blu-ray.

Even Paramount admitted that the HD DVD of Transformers doesn't have a lossless audio track (which would have been present on the now-cancelled Blu-ray disc) because it would have required a video quality sacrifice due to bandwidth. It's a shame Paramount got bought.

And would HD DVD really be cheaper if Toshiba wasn't taking a loss on every player sale in order to increase sales volume? It's an unsustainable economic model where even the cheap off-brand Chinese manufacturers can't compete for a profit.

I suggest either going Blu-ray or purchasing both formats, because HD DVD only is sending the message that you would rather have an OK HD format now rather than a quality HD format in the near future.
