I hope I'm not gonna make an ass of myself with this thread, but It appears to me that no matter how I set it up in the DVDP options or within My Profiler, '18' rated titles do not appear in the online collection if anyone other than myself looks at it.

I currently have my settings within DVDP set up not to show 'Adult' genre titles online (I only have 3) but to show all other titles... My profiler is set not to show adult online... But when looking at my online list when not signed in, I have about 80 titles missing from the list.

Upon further investigation I find that all the titles missing are 18+ rated, even though I have specifically set the system up to just look at genre.

I'm sure 2.x did this correctly, and I guess that is why I haven't really noticed till now... never thought to look till a friend mentioned a sizeable chunk of dvd's had gone missing from the list.

Has anyone else noticed this, and more to the point, does anyone have a solution?

I have had a good search through the forums and have not seen anything previously.
Gavin.

have a look here

the short answer is that this is a known new 'feature'.

The new website no longer cares what setting you use - everything that is rated 18 must be hidden..

Not quite; if you set it to Show Adult online then it does show '18' titles as well, the problem (as we've all seen) is that you can't show '18's without showing Adult as well... and I can't for the life of me figure out what legal problems are solved by this.

FWIW the usual suggestion is to keep your Adult titles in a separate database and then allow Adult online... which of course means Adult DVD voting/accuracy in the Db will be all but lost given that using this method means the titles aren't in your online database so you can't vote on any changes...

I really think Ken needs to explain the problem he's 'solving' by doing this so another solution can be found that is more satisfactory for normal users.

Another alternative is just to keep them in your wishlist or ordered and then only load up owned. BUt again voting will be lost on these.

Yes - especially if the change has been done merely to solve a US problem..

Me neither.  In my eyes it causes more problems than it solves.

Definitely!  I could well understand adult DVD's not being shown online (at least not without some kind of warning anyway) but most 18 rated movies can be picked up and read/looked at in a store that sells/rents them, by anyone that wishes to do so.  Where's the harm in showing them on a website?

Just seems like overkill to me.

I could understand the logic of hiding R18 DVDs - as they are exclusively pornographic, but not 18 certificates.

again this was covered under the old system - you just gave any 'adult' dvds a genre of 'adult' and you could exclude them from the online collection whilst allowing 18 cert DVDs to show.

... and what's even more odd is that this system DOESN't stop you showing Adult titles online, it just means that if you want to show your regular 18 rated titles (like Lethal Weapon etc,) which most of us would, then you also end up showing 'proper' Adult titles and covers even if you would like to hide those from potentially causing offence.

I just don't see how the present system stops potential legal issues when it makes it more likely to show real Adult images online!

BTW pauls42, if you put them in Wishlist or Ordered you do get to vote on them... however for me I use the wishlist/ordered as intended and specifically point people to them when they ask me what I want for my birthday so it isn't an option!

Has Ken actually stated it's a legal problem?

I remember there was thought to be an issue on the old site around showing nudity, something to do with having to have records to prove the person in the image was over the legal age. But I also thought that was resolved.

I can't confirm it as it seems the search function no longer works at all on the old forums.

maybe the point is that you make the decision to show the adult titles and not Invelos so if anyone gets sued for showing adult images Online it's you.

So do you class 18 as adult?

No but to show your 18 rated you must enable your adult titles to be seen (If you have any  )

So... would you class Lethal Weapon as an adult film?

As it stands at the moment I have the Lethal Weapon boxset not showing in my online db, but it shows up Lethal Weapon 3 & 4 as they are both 15 certificate.

A sizeable portion of my DVD's are 18 certificate, such as Scary Movie, Sin City, Lucky Number Slevin but these IMO and (due to the certification) that of the BBFC are not X rated, pornographic or in any way what I would regard as "adult" movies.

I am trying to make an effort not to show the adult titles online, but because of this '18' thing, I am more than likely just going to show the lot online because it is the only way I can display the DVD's I want in the list, as I only have 3 films that I do not want to show online.  I am pretty sure that is not the intention of the 'feature'!

I suppose it comes down to how the different countries rate their movies, but to me this is just a pain in the ass, and the old 2.x way was better.

like you I use ordered / wishlist items correctly so its no good for me either.

I had thought the system only loaded up the ordered / wishlist if you had selected to display those online - but of course that selection is done in the My Profiler online.. so yes they will get loaded up anyway..

have a look at phpdvdprofiler. I'm just pointing people at this collection now since with this you can exclude only adult titles and the rest appear.

See my Sig
