Does anyone have any information regarding this TV-series from the mid-70's (not to be confused with the movie from 1962).

Has it been released on DVD - and if so, where can I buy it? (Preferably R2, but not a must).

Any info greatly appreciated.

Sorry, Berak. All quiet on the Western Front. MGM, as you might have guessed, owns the title but there have not been any releases to date and no rumblings or rumors.

Keep an eye on here: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/

For the shows I've been anticipating, they've been on the ball witch catching announcements as they've been made.

It's not available commercially from the studio but there's many places that sell a "boxset" of all the episodes.  These websites consider the show old enough to be "public domain".  I don't know if they're right or not, but the Studios are not stopping them from selling them.  I won't post a link to any of them but they're easy enough to find by putting the following into Google:

"How the West was Won" tv

Then just look at the sponsored links that show at the top and the right side.  Most of them have the entire shows run on 25 DVDs.

Is this the same one the critics were calling "How The West Was Bored"?

Vega and every one of those site are supplying ILLEGAL pirated copies. They do not own the material and have no legal right to sell them.

Owning pirated material is as illegal as the sale of same, and subject  to the same punishments, which in the US are very healthy. So if you have been purchasing from these dealers, do so at your own risk.

You can think that but I find it hard to believe they would not be shutdown if that were the case.  Plus, they are paying Google to show up in the "sponsored" links section and Google has a policy against illegal websites because of the DMCA.  As far as ownership, they do not claim to own the rights, their claim is that these shows are in the public domain.  As I said in the original post, who knows if that is correct, but that's what their claim is.  If that is not the case then I would have to wonder why the studios have done nothing to stop them?  I know there are websites out there that sell pirated movies and such, but I've never seen any that would pay for and openly advertise on Google and Yahoo.

In any case, I'm not into old shows like this so I'd never be purchasing from any of them myself.  I was just offering Berak an option since this will likely never see the light of day as a studio release.

Vega:

You can thin k what youy like, they shut them down and they re-open, its a never ending cycle, and much easier to do on the interneyt. It is ILLEGAL, plain and simple and if you own any YOU are equally subject to Copyright violation, which can bring fines of $250,000 per occurence and/or 5 years in prison per occurence, they will also confiscate ALL of your equipment and any supporting material including your LEGAL discs, and then you will be sued by the film companies on top of that foir damages usually to the tune of several millions of dollars. I have watched it happen to people just like you, Vega

lol.. people just like me?  Talk about jumping to conclusions.    As I said in my post, I've never purchased anything from those sites as I'm not into old TV shows.  I've never even looked at them until Berak asked the question and I did a 5 second Google search.  Everything in my collection was purchased at BB, Target, Walmart, Amazon, or Columbia House.

I'm also in no way defending piraters as people made the movies/tv shows and they deserve to be paid for it.  But seriously, I'd love to see one reported case where a studio went after someone who did purchase a pirated DVD and sued them for millions.  Or even a case where the FBI arrested someone for it.  Again, in no way do I condone it and I would never purchase one myself, but the idea of the FBI and Studios coming after Joe Blow for owning one is pretty amusing.

And if you've seen it happen to people you know.. who are you hanging around with?

I've actually read on IMDB.com where people had actually bought these pirated tv series and they regret it. They end up paying sometimes $100 or more for a third generation vhs copy with commercials or commercials badly edited out and a bug (tv jargon for the tv station logo) at the bottom of the screen. If people would just wait like the rest of us, then they could get something of a much better quality.

Good, don't, it's not worth it, pal.

You would be surprised, in my prior life I spent many years in the early days of video, and people actually walking into a store a bragging about what they have copied and so forth is not at all uncommon.
