The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, AND for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition). It's usually safe to use one of the built-in selections if appropriate. If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box, and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title. My reading of those rules is that there are 2 criteria. 1) Is it one of the standard editions (from the drop down listing)? If it is, so long as you can document why it applies you can add it. 2) Is it a non standard (free text) edition. If so it has to come from the cover AND distinguish between different versions. You can only lock the entire title block, including title, edition and original title. I do this since the dawn of time, but when the original titles were introduced I had to enter them myself because the lock prevented an update. I only use the dist trait if I have two different versions of the same movie, e.g. Dune Theatrical & Dune TV cut | | | Karsten

" It says that the edition WILL help distinguish between different release.... not that it does currently. just that it will help as in if another release does come out it WILL help. There is nothing in the rules that says it has to be current different releases of the same title. | | | | Pete |

My assumption (dangerous I know) has been that 'standard' meant it was one of the built-in selections in the drop down choice, and therefore I have only ever taken data from the case (box), normally, but not exclusively, on the front cover.
Whether thats 100% right or wrong, I do not know, but it's how I've understood it. I read that sentence in the same way, especially if you consider the sentence before that: Quote:

It should definitely get introduced into the program, especially since the studios do not use a common name for stating the rental status of their DVDs. I raised that request in the feature request forum numerous times and also drafted a rule proposal at the old inofficial rule forum (back in the days of IVS), but sadly to no avail yet. | | | | Lutz | | | | Last edited: by Darxon |
