Got our new Sony 46" LCD projector TV this past week, as well as the Shaw Hi Def PVR box from Motorola (DCT 3400).,
and I totally realize why there are 'black bars' around wide screen movies , especially 'panavsion style' aspect ratio's such as 2:00.1  / 2:35.1 up to Ben Hur's 2:76.1  ..

BUT why is the academy ratio of 1:78 and 1:85 (haven't tried 1:66 yet) have black bars over and above the images ??? The New Sony TV of mine ( KDF 46E series) has the option of choosing Wide Zoom/Normal/Full.Zoom/Off (4:3).. and In choosing some zoom features it appears to me that I am blooming the picture either outwards to full or upwards to fill. Wide Zoom seems to be the most natural looking but again isn't this cheating on the image?? I thought that my 16 x 9 TV would fit a 1:78 image naturally and the aspect ratio of 1:78.1  is the same as 16 x 9. ??

I do not wish to cut off heads and forefront images to use the zoom feature,, therefore any 4:3 TV and DVD should be set on Off ..,Plus it looks most natural when set to Normal.
But my widescreen DVD and cable TV broadcasts should not have black bars for the above mentioned aspect ratios.

Also the HiDEF upper channels from my cable subscriber (Shaw) has these widescreen movies as 'Major Window Boxed ' 16 x 9 images.., I have to again use the zoom feature to get the image to fill the screen.  Will HDMI wire fix this ?

My HDMI wire is coming soon from eBay,($5.00 instead of $80.)  so right now I am using cable and component as well as SVHS and RCA Jacks.

Any one happen to know and suggest ideas I haven't come across yet?

Thanks

Sounds to me like something is set up wrong. Is you cable box set to output to a 16:9 TV or a 4:3?

Are you sure your viewing the movies through the component input on the TV?

Perhaps stupid questions. Forgive me if you've already set it up. I just know some of those I've assisted in the past did not have something set up right (family mostly  )

Yes I have set set to 16 by 9.. and component is displayed when I navigate thru the 7 fields of inputs ., # 2 is a DVD player with component jacks and my (i.e.) Cirque du Soleil: Quidam (1:78.1) has black bars  unless I use the zoom feature. to fill the screen ..

Maybe I should contact Sony via their 1 800 number and check with them...

Have you actually checked the ratio of the displayable area? I have heard of some 16:9 TVs that are actually closer to 15:9 or 17:9.
Also, does this happen on all 1.78:1 DVDs or just certain titles? If it's certain titles then its more likely that the black bars are actually part of the image information coming from the disc and nothing to do with the TV.
With 1.85:1 you should get small bars top and bottom, and with 1.66:1 you should get small bars on either side. Both of these should be coming from the DVD and nothing to do with the display.

Not living in Canada, so I don't have Shaw service or a Motorola (DCT 3400), I do have a Sony LCD and have no problems. My DVD, VCR and Laser Disc players are connected directly to the TV and currently use a antenna  to pickup TV stations.

In Goggling Shaw, I noticed sites (forums) for Shaw problems.
Aldo I would refer you to the Motorola Connected Home Solutions site.

Turns out the Cable box had to be 'opened' via it's own menu screen and the 'TV 4:3' was set to 'stretched'  and when turned off - that made a world of difference., The 1:78.1 programming now fills the screen., then channel  when changed to a 4:3.1 show the image is displayed with black bars on each side., and channels of 2:35.1 images are centered in large window box style which can be viewed normally  thru the Full image. to black bars above and below. .
Never have to use the zoom features unless desired.
