Whoa.

While there has been an occasional DVD released on nearly every day of the week over the past decade -- nearly all of them have had fairly small distribution, totally independent of the main DVD distribution network.

Keep a close check on this, everyone!

Good alert for us, Skip.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Plus it appears they are only using one source for their contibution "movieweb.com".  As Ken has stated before we should be using multiple sources for this type of data.

99% of the titles have been released on Tuesdays dating back to MY TIME in the industry over 20 years ago. But , as Cliff njoted there is the occassional narrow release from, usually a public domain distributor.

Richie:

You are presuming that the information is correct, release date is TUESDAY, except in rare instances usually due to public domain releases or a holiday as in Christmas 2007, when SOME titles were moved to Sunday. The only VALID documentation would be a press release from the distributor, which I doubt we will find, any THIRD party data from the viewpoint of TEN years ago is highly questionable...even Amazon.

Total Recall
release date (current) 17/6/97 DVD Empire,Eorbit,Intelliflix,

release date (contribution change) 18/6/97 B&N, MyHound,SciFind,IMDB,Amazon

So - we have disagreement amongst a quick look of net distributors, so potentially the contribution could be considered right/wrong dependent on where you check.

Hear what you are saying Skip, and don't disagree, but of course when considered by the rules the contributor has done all that is asked. So a no vote would be wrong.
There is no requirement to provide press releases etc.

Tricky one this and a PITA when it is the only change to the profile

Several new changes coming as we speak - Batman & Robin, Space Jam etc.
I have asked the contributor to join in the chat here so we can agree on this rather than all yes/no voting

It's simple richie, release day in the US is TUESDAY, any documentation to the cotrary is WRONG most of the time. Tuesday has been release day for over 25 years.

Give me a Press release, that is all I will aceppt. I will not accept ANY third party data from 10 years ago.

That's tantamount to saying IMDb is accurate, which they are NOT.

When you see multiple dates, go wit the one on Tuesday.

Skip is absolutely correct. With the exception of certain holidays and holiday shopping days (Black Friday), 99% of all new releases occur on Tuesdays.

If someone is going to change a release date from a Tuesday, Absent a press release they're going to need 100% of retailers and distributors reporting the non-Tuesday date, especially for a DVD that was released in 1997. If a reputable source can be shown to have the same date that is in the database, a "no" vote is warranted.

With all due respect, what you 'accept' is immaterial, this is not your database we are voting on.
If the contribution is abiding by the current rules, then voting no could be deemed wrong.

I have voted no simply to bring attention to the contributor, who I have invited here to comment.
It will be much more productive if we can agree on an acceptable source structure, or more pertinent to your comment verify conclusively that it is always a Tuesday for release date. In that way we are all working with the same script.

I'm playing devil's advocate here on behalf of potential new contributors so please don't beat me up
No 'reputable' sources are currently in the rules. If they follow the current rule then what the contributor has done is not wrong.

If it is always Tuesday for region 1 USA releases, then lets put it forward for a rule change

Current rule;
DVD Release Date
Use the date when the DVD was first released for sale in its specific locality. Do not change the DVD Release Date if a release:

Goes out of print and then is subsequently re-released using the same UPC.
Is recalled due to a production error and is subsequently re-released in a corrected version
The DVD Release Date is always the date of Original Release.

What kind of verification do we need that 99% of releases are on Tuesdays? Pick a website that shows upcoming releases and look at dates. Look at general historical data.

When I worked at Blockbuster in 1995-1997, even VHS was released on Tuesdays. new sales and new rentals. When I was buying VHS and DVD at Suncoast in the late 90s, new rleases came out on Tuesdays. It's pretty common knowledge.

Like I said, if you can find a conflict with a release date change contribution, since the sources are third-party anyway, there's no reason to change the data from what is in the database.

The closest thing to a first-party source is a press release, as Skip said.

.

why are you picking a fight with R1 users?
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

I also worked managing a local video store here and I can also say that 99% of the time all releases has always been on Tuesdays.
