What is the 'Theatrical Release' for DVD Profiler purpose?
is it the official 'Theatrical Release' in the country of origin of the movie?
or festival showing or ...
Does the IMDB data counts? ...

I would have to say Other myself.

Case in point LotR

Produced in (as we all know) NZ

First seen I do believe in USA (I maybe wrong).

I don't know what would be the reliable and exhaustive source of information for all movies released up till now (as if there was one...), but I would like to see the Theatrical Release date to be referred as the first public release date anywhere - i.e. no festivals or any other special screenings before such date.

It should be the date anywhere in the world, but I guess it is almost always also a country of production where that first date takes place.

This poll only shows that it would be much better to change the rules to take "production year", as it is in 99,9% of all movies visible in the credits. No need for speculations, third party sources etc...

First public showing in any country, and yes, you might have to do some research (gasp).

As Patsa mentioned in the other thread, Made-for-TV movies don't fit into the Theatrical Release scheme of things.  And Direct-to-video movies pose the same problem.

Some users seem to think that they know exactly what was meant by the Production Year rule. It would be interesting to see if they could put that meaning into a wording that doesn't leave a lot of loop holes...

For a community that takes such pride in using the credits as a primary basis for it's database (as it should be, I might add), I find it hard to believe we are still messing with theatrical release dates where we have to rely on 3rd party info, when we have the copyright date available in the credits.

As SpaceFreakMicha stated, it would eliminate all speculations.

I had originally voted for the theatrical release in the country of origin, but I've changed it to Other as I have to agree with those who've pointed out that production year would make things a lot easier and more accurate.

The only time I can thing of when using the production year could get a little messy would be in cases like Blue Sky where the movie was held back from being released for a while before it finally hit theaters.

Those cases are comparatively rare though, so using the production year would indeed simplify things for the better.

I read the original poster's question as a what-if? specifically for theatrical releases.

Theatrical release date is of course completely different from production year. If we had a field for theatrical release dates/years, in that case I again would prefer the public release date in whatever country it takes place, no festivals or other special screenings prior to that public date.

Production year by copyright information should be clear enough. For me, personally, theatrical release date is much more interesting (in other than TV-releases, obviously...), and I'd like to see a field for that included in the program, and used whenever reliable date can be found.

@Astrakan: I know one other case, "Saratoga Trunk", Produced in 1943, released in 1945. That hasn't been published on DVD so irrelevant in this discussion for the moment... I suppose those were years when many productions, although finished, had to wait for a proper theatrical release till the following year or later.

I'll agree with Theatrical release is first public showing anywhere. I also think production year is easier. But let's not change the field to that please. I really don't want to be seeing 00's of submissions just for a new production year.

"Other."

Theatrical release is first public showing of the film, which should include any festivals or public releases.
99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1."
