| | Posted: | | | | Normally when I see a 'Commentary' subtitle checked I assume that it's subtitled for those who can't hear/have difficulty hearing in the language of the commentary. However I've come across a DVD where the commentary is in English but it is subtitled in French or Dutch (as is the main soundtrack). Would it be correct to tick the Commentary subtitle box for these 'commentary subtitled in another language' or would this be misleading (especially to those who are hard of hearing and may be looking to buy the set) and maybe 'Other' should be used? FWIW to those who may say that hard of hearing/deaf people would be likely to double check on the Cover rather than just go by profiler, in this specific instance the DVD in question has TOTALLY the wrong info on Audio and Subtitles on the cover! Now for the question that scares me. do you have any idea how common this is. I think the only way currently would be by defining the Commentary subs through other features. | | Posted: | | | | They are "commentary" subtitles, so I'd list them as such, although I agree that it's unfortunate that we can't indicate the language of that/those particular set(s) of subtitles. Ken should really fix this - it may not be a problem for U.S. region 1 users, but it's actually quite common here in R2. Quoting skipnet50: Quote:

I might not even have noticed but I was about to 'correct' the Profile because the cover said something different and when I chacked the Profile, not the cover, was correct... well, more correct depending on how people want to deal with the question raised.  | | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |

Unlike Tim this is the first time I've seen it (at least where the commentary is ONLY subtitled in a 'foreign' language)... I have seen this a lot on German DVDs. The audio commentary is available in its original language (most often English) with the option to show German subtitles so that German people which do not understand English can also enjoy the commentary. EDIT: In the German locality the commentary subtitles check box is normally checked in those profiles without any discussion. | | | | Last edited: by RHo |

Skip I have a few Japanese films (both Live action and animated) that have Japanese commentary and English subtitles. And there is another type of subtitle that can't be handled well. Some films that include both the original language and a dub have two English subtitle tracks (or even 3). - Standard subtitles (literal translation of the original dialog) - Subtitles for hard of hearing (match the English dub, may not be a literal translation) - and a few, Signs and Songs. (for use with an English dub, translate on screen text and sometimes song lyrics. I only have a few with all three types, but I have lots of discs with two English subtitle tracks. | | | | Tom. |
