To the best information I have RCE was never fully implemented, in fact i believe Columbia was just about the only company to make use of it, and it was abandoned about 3 or 4 years ago.

BTW: Are there still new RCE disc out there? I thought the industry has abandoned RCE some time ago.

Yes, there are. For example, Fox still uses it, although it is less obvious, because they don't combine it with R0. As such it doesn't matter for DVD Profiler, because DVDProfiler doesn't allow to track the RCE info itself.

as an aside, for my local database, anything that is marked as RC=0 in the database I then change so that all the regions are ticked.

This is because a search for RC=2 won't find a profile that's been marked as RC=O, so in order to get the search working correctly I tick all the regions.

(This is local only of course)

Mathias:

I haven't found RCE on any Fox titles in a VERY long time, DVDShrink doesn't show ANYTHING on Fox even though some o6ther tools might report, there is simply nothing on the disc the discs that indicate any presence of RCE. What are you basing this on?

Edit: There is a difference between no regions and all regions, but it's very hard to distinguish and involves really looking deep into the IFO file, which is why I use the above method instead..

No, there isn't. On disk all region bits are set for region 0 and all regions. Those are simply two labels for the same thing. For profiler purposes, we don't check any region marks if the bits for region 1 to 6 are all set on disc. And we totally ignore region bits 7 (flight) and 8 (not defined).

Not quite true. In the VMG the region code can either be set to 255 (no regions) or 0 (all regions). Although you're right that this has no relevance to Profiler.

Yes, they can set the code to 0 on the disc. But I think such a disc would be playable in no region and not in all regions. Therefore such a disc is silly and I haven't seen one yet. And if the code is set to 255, the disc is definitely able to be played in all regions. Labelling a disc coded as 255 with the logo containing a 0 is simply another way to label it with the word 'all'.

I believe you that you haven't found it. As I said, Fox doesn't combine it with R0 - so there is usually no need to do an RCE check for DVD Profiler purposes.

My latest Fox title with RCE is the US release of Juno: Digital Copy Special Edition (UPC 024543-515944), released on 15-Apr-2008. The disc has region code 1.

BTW, I use a disassembler for the disc's program code to analyze possible RCE code. But if you use DVDShrink to browse through the titles and menus, you will also notice a static screen saying something like "disc not playable in this region." They don't use the world map.

Hmmmmm, interesting. Do you think there is a connection with the Digital Copy concept and using RCE.

No. They have always used RCE, even here in R2-land. It's probably just an authoring template that gets used again and again without anyone thinking about it.
