Die Hard subtitles not selectable from menu? :Solved |

| | Posted: | | | | I had a NO vote on my update regarding the subtitles. The NO voter agreed to let me ask you guys on the forum and here is my answer to the no vote.
I had to check closer myself. When I add subtitles I use whats encoded to the disc using the remotecontrol. And the French is there, however not selectable through the menu though. I then switch to French audio and French subtitles, and here is what I found out.
The audio is of course French, so they don't subtitle the dialogue. But in the scene where Takagi are about to give them the password, one of the terrorists open up a laptop and we see some commandlines on the screen. Those are subtitled in French, and also anywhere else where there are written words in English, i.e where John flips his wallet open and we see the note from his daughter, also subtitled in French, and the EXIT sign is also subtitled.
So I checked the rules regarding this, but rules says only Up to 32 subtitles may be added, not how to take them from (from menu or actual encoded subs). So the subtitles are encoded, but not listed as an option through the menu. I don't know if French speaking people knows that and knows there is that kind of function?
Anway these French subtitles aren't forced, they are selectable trough remotecontrol only. So should I leave the update as it is, or remove the french subtitles and resubmit it? | | | "What's God?"

To me just subtitling words that are seen on screen so those watching it with a different language track understand them doesn't really count as a subtitle track in it's own right.
To put it another way, if you looked at the profile and saw that it had French subtitles, what would you expect to find on the disc? | | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

| | Posted: | | | | I have seen many discs with (alternate) language audio tracks that have matching "print translation (subtitle)" tracks, but the print translation track is not menu selectable. Such as many of the dual US/Canada releases with French audio, and some anime releases that show English sign/book translations with the English audio. On some, the print translation seems to kick in when the corresponding audio language is selected, on others I suspect, without any actual experimentation, that it kicks in depending on the locality/language you have set on your player.
In ablsence of a more accurate method, I mention it in the submission notes. I agree that checking a language subtitle indicates a full audio translation. |

| | Posted: | | | | He is not describing that, Mol. he is decribing what we have referred to in the past as forced subs. these usually will appear to translate some form of written device appearing On screen. A note , a road sign, etc.They do not appear continually, they are not menu selectable and sometimes the user may have little or no control of them. they are entirely different from a subtitle which runs through out the film, menu selectable or not.
