| Posted: | | | | Just wanted some opinions on this. In the discussions on moderation someone made a comment that seemed to indicate that the poster found sarcasm unwanted.
As I personally find sarcasm to be just another tool that can be used in discussions, and I use it on occasion, I'd like to know if you think this is wrong.
I'll provide an example. I once wrote something like this (I couldn't find the actual post right now):
First you said that she's not part of the cast list. Now you say that she is. Did the rules change in the meantime?
Sure, I could have written "Did you change your opinion?" or something like that. I just find that a gently humorous prod like that helps the discussion along.
In my mind this type of sarcasm isn't insulting or an attack or anything like that. But I guess others may interpret it differently. What say you? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | I think the problem with sarcasm as a whole is that it is always at the expense of somebody or something else. The example you gave is very mild, but how do we gauge something like that? I certainly wouldn't want to see sarcasm banned wholesale, but we have to be careful that the "butt" of the joke isn't genuinely offended by it. We'd have to be aware that what may be mild to us may not be to others. There's also the language barrier to consider, some people simply may not recognise the sarcasm in the post and take the wrong point from it. Unless of course your whole post has been sarcastic, in which case.... damn you!!! | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

| Posted: | | | | I don't view that comment as sarcasm, Gunnar, I view it as spoiling for a fight. And i have told you that before. You may intend it as sarcasm, but I see it as simply trying to get a fight going. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

You may intend it as sarcasm, but I see it as simply trying to get a fight going. I could make a sarcastic remark here, but I'll refrain, if that's what it takes to avoid a fight. But then again it seems some people don't need sarcasm to start a fight. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

+1 Don't forget that not all of us are english native and it's really easy to not understand the writen sarcasm. It would be the same if I was sarcastic in french or if someone else would in german, swedish, ... Better to not use it than be missinterpreted. | | | Last edited: by Jimmy S |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting GSyren: Quote: What say you? Sarcasm is difficult to convey online, and people are often quick to interpret what they read in the most negative way possible. So, while not wrong (IMO), it's probably unhelpful. However, I reserve the right to use it myself without warning. --------------- |

| Posted: | | | | Not a fan of sarcasm. I find it kind of abrasive. Sometimes I let it slip myself, but I try not to. | | | Tags, tags, bo bags, banana fana fo fags, mi my mo mags, TAGS! | Posted: | | | | Oh yes, sarcasm is just the root of all evil! I actually love sarcastic humor. When done right I don't see the problem. But when used for evil, it certainly can be a nasty tool. I do my best to use it in the right context. But I'm sure if I went back I could find plenty of instances where I should have kept my mouth shut instead. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. | Posted: | | | | Concerning the Definition of sarcasm
1 : a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain 2 a : a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual
I think as a previous poster said, is difficult to convey in typed word. If it was meant in jest, we cannot see your expression to know this.
I wouldn't want to ban sarcasm, but we must be careful how and when it is used. A lot of times, if used in the middle of an argument, could be interpreted as "Fightin' Words"

| Posted: | | | | I love sarcasm and satire and dark comedy but I seldom use it - I don't have that talent.
I would be afraid my poor attempts to use witty language would be taken wrong. |

| Posted: | | | | Sarcasm is witty language used to convey insults or scorn. If you think insults and scorn are 'bad', then sarcasm is bad. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
