| Posted: | | | | How do you sort your DVDs?
I used to split by genre and sometimes even by studios or collections (ie. The Criterion Collection). Now that my collection has gone past 3,000 titles, I have gone back to alphabetical sorting. Everything goes into 2 piles, DVDs or Highdef discs (Blu-rays and HD DVDs). Everything gets sorted alphabetically with the following rules/exceptions
1. Titles starting with number gets sorted as if the number is spelled out in English (except numbers that are next to one another gets sorted in numerical way, 12 before 13) 2. Titles in series gets sorted together even when they have different titles (Fast and the Furious, 2Fast 2 Furious, or Rambo series) 3. Articles in the beginning of the title (A, an, the) and spaces anywhere are ignored for the purposes of sorting. 4. Movies with non-English titles (with few exceptions) are sorted under their International titles whenever possible. | | | My Home Theater | | | Last edited: by xradman |

| Posted: | | | | I have two main sorting patterns: 1) Alphabetical, though I do have TV on DVD and my Disney cartoons in a separate spot. Series are generally together, like you mentioned, but I go back and forth with the James Bond movies. 2) Since I ran out of room...everything that doesn't fit on the shelves are in piles/random places. One day I WILL have enough storage. I really will! I use profiler a lot with this so I can easily find those that are in odd spots. I've thought about different ways of sorting...mainly by genre, but I've always come to the conclusion that it's a lot easier just doing it by the alphabet. That way it's easy enough to go to the "L"s and find the movie I'm looking for rather than trying to think...well, it could be drama or action or...and then going to the right spot. I only have 2 blu's right now, and those are combos, so right now they are with the Disney movies. At this point, I think I'd just keep those in with the regular dvds since I don't have too many but maybe after collecting quite a few, I'll separate them out just to get them looking uniform on the shelf. | | | Lori |

| Posted: | | | | First in first out.
I found out a long time ago, trying to adjust continuously to alphabetize was just not a very efficient way to do it.
What I do, I take a movie in and assign a location. That location is based on what case shelf and position that movie occupies. Then I update my listings in a book that I keep. If people want to peruse my movies, they pick up the binder and look. Alphabetically. Once they decide on the movie, I go to the location that movie is in and retrieve it. It also goes back into that spot.
This prevents me from continuously resorting my DVD's |

| Posted: | | | | I have four different catagories that I sort by:
Blu-ray, DVD, TV on DVD and Disney/Pixar. TV on Blu-ray, since I only have a few, stay with Blu-ray. Within those catagories, I sort alpha/numeric. Numbers first, then letters. While it can be a pain to move things over, as I buy new titles, I find this works best for me as it is quite easy to find the title I am looking for. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | Because my DVD's are scattered as a result of no decent central cabinet to hold them all, sorting for me is a bit... complex.
Ordinarily, they are sorted into the following groups:
First, for DVD's that I have not finished entirely (even if it's only a single 5-minute featurette reaining to watch), I have a small rack sitting next to my computer.
Next, a large rack holds the live-action DVD's that I enjoy the most of which are also in a standard sized keep case. The keep case issue is because the rack holds DVD's from top to bottom. Each section can hold 5 keep cases (meaning you have to lift as many as 4 up to get to the bottom one). I hate this rack, but it was the only one I could find that fit within the area needed. Putting larger cases in this rack adds other problems.
On a second rack, my boxed sets are all stacked together at the top.
Next are most of the remaining live action movies.
Next shelf has movies I don't really care for (mostly gift DVD's)
All animated movies are currently stacked on the floor so that when my nieces or young cousins come to visit, they won't go rummaging through all DVD's like a tornado.
Duplicates are currently stacked off in another area.
So you could call it organized normally only in that they are siting somewhere.
.. but not right now. Right now I have all of them stacked on the floor in two huge piles trying to reorganize as well as trying to find a bigger cabinet for them all together within the limited space available. | | | If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

| Posted: | | | | The DVDs on shelves are alphabetical..numbers first in numerical order. I have 5 shelves so far that hold different amounts of DVDs and they are basically all full.
2 of the shelves - they are the same type of shelf - have my tv shows on DVD. There is still room for more sets on the shelf, but I have more sets piled around that haven't made it to the shelf yet. So I think I'm going to run out of room there before all of them get to the shelves.
One shelf is from animated movies. I do have my Muppet movies there as well.
The other two shelves have the other movies in alphabetical order on the actual shelves...plus piles stacked on top that are in no order at all.
I have have other piles here and there too.
I need more shelves. Well...I really need more room for more shelves. lol | | | |

| Posted: | | | | I used to sort by a rough genre pattern but went back to alphabetical. Starting with the number titles and ending with Z.
The only things that stand apart are box sets and Blu-rays.
And I don't mix series and movies. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | According to country eg India (here a split of BW and regional movies), Western, HK, Korea etc Boxes and TV Series are extra. 3 actors got their own shelves. All are sorted by alphabeth by their english title if there is one and if not by original name. Since I have only 8 BR till now they are together with the DVDs. | Posted: | | | | First I sort by:
Blu-Ray, DVD, HDVD
Then within those 3 categories:
TV, Special Packaging, Slip Cases, Steelbooks
At last but not least:
Alphabetical within those categories

| Posted: | | | | Alphabetical by original English title, for non-American/English movies by the title I remember best. Movie series are together (Romeros "Living Dead", dollar trilogy,...), TV series are seperate and unsorted. | | | |

| Posted: | | | | Space is the biggest issue. Like Blair said, sorting is complex. This is because of the space issues.
First, by DVD, Blu-Ray or Box Set.
Blu-rays are alphabetical by title in my bedroom on 1 shelf & the shelves of my headboard. The overflow is in magenta colored stacking bins.
Box sets are alphabetical by title on another shelf in my bedroom. The overflow are in drawers under my closet, a few overflow in the entertainment center.
DVDs are separated into categories, each alphabetical by title: - Criterion Collection (two shelves on a bookcase in my bedroom) - Star Trek (shelf in my bedroom), sharing space with the Andromeda box set - Holiday Movies (shelf in the hall) - Music shares the shelf with the Holiday movies - Documentaries (another shelf in the hall). Documentaries overflow to a shelf on my desk in my bedroom. - Animation (non-Anime) shares the shelf with the Documentaries - Porn (small shelf in the living room near the kitchen) - Anime (15 white bins stacked in the living room & my bedroom) - Movies (another shelf in the hall, 4 shelves & 2 wire racks in the living room) - overflow in white bins in my bedroom closet - Disney Treasures tins (behind a door on the entertainment center)
None of the overflow is in order.
