Several sources indicate that Denzel Washington (born 1954) made his screen debut as an uncredited alley mugger in "Death Wish" (1974).

This screen capture seems to confirm this information.
Any thought ?

True, but that wasn't the question.

I guess that could be Denzel in the screenshot, but I'm far from sure.

Is there a DVD-Version (or BD for that matter) of Death Wish available with some kind of commentary? Sometimes the directors or similar crew share such tidbits of information on those.

According to his biography, at People.com, he started at Fordham University in the fall of 1973.  It goes on to say...

"As a camp counselor at a Boys Club camp in 1975, Washington appears in a variety show and falls in love with acting. He later lands roles in Fordham campus productions of Eugene O'Neill's The Emperor Jones and Othello."

"After graduating from Fordham University with a B.A. in Journalism, Washington enrolls in San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre and spends the summer filming his first onscreen role in the TV movie Wilma. He meets future wife Pauletta Pearson, an actress/singer/pianist, on set."

...I suppose it is possible that the person in that scene is Denzel, but it doesn't fit with the above time line.

It sur looks like him and IMDb has him listed a well. I'd say that makes it very likely that it's him.

Yeah, but imdb has him listed because he looks like the guy and someone thought "no question" that is him and submitted it. IMDB listing adds nothing to the possibility.
Someone tweet Denzel and ask him!

That is not an official Denzel Washington web site. It has no more credibility than any other site.

And no less... Personally I'm convinced by the screen caps. I examined the sequence image per image, and this guy really looks like Denzel Washington.
