Here is a picture of the front cover title and the rear cover title block of UPC: 097361-462646.

A contributor is attempting to change the Title from

"Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol" to
"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"

with the following contribution notes:
Quote:
corrected title per rules:

For titles which include periods, dashes, or other symbols, check the credit block on the back of the case if included. If not, check the film credits or opening sequence. Use these to determine whether to exclude or convert the symbol to a standard character such as ".", "-", or "*"

The credit block on the back of the case has a dash.

So far this contribution has received 75% "Yes" votes.

Here are the pertinent portions of the Title Rules:
Quote:
Use the title from the front cover.

...

For titles which include periods, dashes, or other symbols, check the credit block on the back of the case if included. If not, check the film credits or opening sequence. Use these to determine whether to exclude or convert the symbol to a standard character such as ".", "-", or "*"

...

Episode descriptors are part of the title; separate them with a colon and space; e.g. "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock". For multiple descriptors, use a colon and space for each break.

The only "symbol" in the front cover title is a colon, which is already a standard character and doesn't need to be "converted", and certainly not excluded, because it's in the title on both the front and rear cover.  So the "symbol" clause of the rule would seem to call for no changes to the front cover title, and certainly not for the insertion of a symbol (a "dash", in this case) that's nowhere to be found on the front cover.

So, am I crazy, or is this contribution in contradiction of the Rules, and the 75% of voters who voted "yes" not paying attention?

At first I thought that the current profile was correct. But, I can see why a dash is being used since the title is written that way on the back cover.

Although there is a colon after Mission there is not one after Impossible. I know that US profiles use the colon but this is not specifically outlined in the rules.

So, now I'm not sure which way is correct.

For some reason I was thinking Episodic Dividers as being for TV series - thank you Scott.

You are not crazy, the contribution is incorrect.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

The "Yes" vote currently stands at under 50%, so hopefully this will be declined or withdrawn.

I wouldn't have bothered creating this thread but a PM went unanswered (although it was read) and no one else seemed to question the contribution at all.

Just out of curiosity, in case I missed it, what is the UPC?  I own this release, but don't recall seeing it up for vote.

Indeed - this should be declined.

Agree; this is definitely wrong as per the Rules... unless there is a "-" actually on the cover in the title separator should be a ":"... I correct enough of these the *right* way without people changing them back to being wrong again!
It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong
