The credits of British film Bullshot (1983) contain a credit that reads:

With Grateful Acknowledgement to Colonel H. C. "Sapper" McNeile, The Creator of "Bulldog Drummond"

In the profile that I'm currently working on, this is entered as an "Original Characters By" credit. Is that correct?

For the record: the film 'Bullshot' is a parody of the 1929 film Bulldog Drummond (and subsequent films starring the same character), on which it is loosely based. There's no doubt that Colonel H. C. "Sapper" McNeile created a character that is being spoofed here, but does such a "With Grateful Acknowledgement to" credit actually qualify for OCB here?

I'd say "Yes" (Original Characters),
but not because of the "acknowledgement", but because of "The Creator of"
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

The thing is that he didn't actually create any of the characters that appear in this film, but rather a character that is parodied in this film. It would be like awarding Ian Fleming an OCB credit for the 'Austin Powers' films...

OK, point taken.

I originally understood that the character named "Bulldog Drummond" actually appeared in the film.

Poll-vote duly corrected
