4K Ultra HD discs are almost here. Decided to make the thread here since I'm not sure if they are going to be contributable in DVD Profiler without a program update, and I know some people will want to contribute them.

The discs are called "4K Ultra HD"

You can pre-order the Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray player UBD-K8500 right now:

http://www.samsung.com/us/video/home-audio/UBD-K8500/ZA

You can pre-order 4K Ultra HD discs on Amazon USA now. Most don't have release dates; The Martian has a March 1 release date.

Some of the movies are Salt, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Chappie, Hancock, The Expendables 3, The Martian, Pineapple Express, and The Smurfs 2.

Packaging / cover example:

99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1."

$400 for a player? No thanks. IMO I don't see this taking off.

What is wrong with $400 for a player?  DVD originally had players for $550-$1.2K and Blu-ray had players for $500-$1.2K at inception.

400 $ is a pretty good price for a decent player, the problem could be the price of TV and Projector 4K ready...

Hell, I paid $2,000 for my first DVD player, a Pioneer Elite DV-09.

It was a gift from my wife who had no idea that it was the beginning of my illness (addiction).

Already have a 4k TV, so it looks like a 4k Player is now on the wish list.

$400 is not too much, but I would stay away from Samsung first generation players, I've had nothing but trouble with them.

True, but as I also said, I don't see it taking off (it would appear the next gen is digital than physical format), the upgrade in quality just isn't enough versus from VHS to DVD and then DVD to BD. I also remember paying a lot for an HD-DVD/BD combo player, though it's been worth every penny.

And yeah, as others said, the TV is going to be the biggest obstacle, though I guess if mine ever gives out, might make the investment depending on the price.
