I can see your concern for missing common name changes. If you've created an alternate profile for a different cover, and no one, or very few, have downloaded that profile from the system, you could definitely miss some updates to things like that.

Personally though, I'm loving it. Just my OCD tendencies really I suppose. I just like knowing that the exact profile I have is in the system, even if it is just for a cover change... but yes, totally can see where you're coming from!

But that's nothing new: the same goes if you have a title from a locality that doesn't have so many users, and therefore, not so many updates. The problem here isn't alternate versions, it's that we use a set of cast and crew per profile, rather than per film.

It is the same movie, the alternate profile was created for the alternate cover.  Same disk, even same jacket cover underneath.

When an update or correction is submitted for 024543-525929, I will never see it because I have 024543-525929 #1.

T!M is correct, we have had these problems with multi locality releases, but seems exasperated since the new alternate profiles.

I think using alternate profiles for simple cover changes has made the database worse.  In some cases, such as television series with rereleases and alternate or store exclusive covers/slips, there can be up to 10 different profiles all with the same disc IDs.  That means the changes would have to be made 10 times, which is unlikely (and has led to fragmented updates), with 10 times the data being stored.

It would be better if we could profile something like the following:

1) A movie level profile which stores items such as studios, genre, original run time, date produced, original aspect ratio, CoO, original rating, cast and crew, etc.
2) A release profile can have a movie level profile associated (linked/tied) to it.  Contains items such as overview, cover art, media companies, release date, case type, SRP, price paid, etc. (things related specifically to the individual release).  Disc level profiles can be linked/tied to the release profile.
3) Disc level profiles that contain items specific to the content on the disc.  Running time, rating, ratio on disc, features, audio tracks, subtitles, changes to cast/crew, region coding, etc.

This way when a disc level profile is updated all release profiles that are associated with the disc profile with same Disc ID automatically benefit from the update.
